John Deere 2840 Steering Problem

Hello and good morning. I am experiencing a problem with the steering on my 2840 JD. It steers but there is a lot of play in the system which causes the tractor to wander when you are trying to travel in a straight line. I have checked all bushings and tie rod ends and the problem seems to be in the steering motor.

Is there an adjustment in the steering motor or some part that can be replaced. I have never worked on a steering motor so I am a complete novice. Thanks for any advice and help.

I have a 2040 which has the same problem. I bought a new steering arm online which I thought would solve the problem, but when I tried to remove the old one, it was frozen to the shaft coming out of the steering box. That was where I thought I'd find most of the wear, so I just left the old arm in place. I was able to help the situation somewhat by replacing both tie-rods. I don't know if the 2840 uses the same steering arm as the 2040, but if you need it, I still have the new one I bought.

Have you closely inspected needle brgs(parts key 10) on bellcrank under the frt end as they have a long history of wearing out from grease worm attacks.

On steering valve only place for slack is where shaft(parts key 3) screws in/out of rod(parts key 32)

Or where woodbutcher mentioned where arm(parts key 9) spline on shaft(parts key 7.

I have a 2640 with the same problem. With the tractor off, you can turn the steering wheel almost 180 degrees before the main arm even starts to move. My problem seems to be in the column also. Did any of your tractors have a loader? Jim do you know what the bottom link in your picture connects to up in the column? Could there be enough slack in the pins to cause our problems? Once again, thanks for your help...

I have checked and it is all tight until the steering motor. Looks like I should look for another steering motor if the fix is too complicated. Thanks.

Shaft(#7) in bottom photo attaches to tie rod assembly(#37) in 2nd photo with a pin that could be worn.
