51 B serial number

I bought a 51 B that was a field find, the serial number tag is completely rusted out. Can I find the serial number anywhere else on the tractor? If not, I know I need a new carb, starter motor, and I'm sure other parts- how can I be sure to order correct parts without knowing serial number? Thanks in advance for your input.

If you have the John Deere book that list all the serial numbers by years they were built you can get an idea of the approximate number for your tractor.
If its typical model B the parts were used for a number of years on a wide range of serial numbers.
Hope this helps.

Hum ? If it actually rusted out I wonder if it is an earlier model maybe a 41 or so ?
I think this because IIRC all of the later B's I have ever seen had aluminum tags.
Got any pictures of this tractor to post ?

If it has no PLATE, why would make the statement that it is a 51 year, Other than the SERIAL NO PLATE there is in effect no difference in 51 or 52 TRACTORS if FACTORY equipped with both tractors having BLACK FACE GAUGES - DELCO and-WATER PUMP .And as for the PHOTO of the (B) in the JD Museum the DECALING is far from correct, JOHN DEERE is misplaced and (B) has no "MADE IN USE" at bottom RADIUS. Again it is who you are not the CORRECTNESS of the TRACTOR same as for some of the TRACTORS showings at THE WORLD WIDE TWO CYL EXPOS. BAH HUMBUG.

Presuming that your tractor is a 1951 model, <a href="http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/cgi-bin/snlookup.cgi?mf=JD&md=B+-+Styled">the serial number on your tractor ranges from 276557 to 299174</a>.

Take a look at the diagram below.

Note the starting motor (Key 65).

You might consider using the 276557 as your serial number when ordering parts.

Hope this helps.

Is the rear axel housing round or square. That change happened around 1950 I believe.

Thanks for all of your input, I think I attached photo of plate correctly. It does have black face gauges and square axle. The plate is on there but can't read serial number.

The 51 and 52 rear wheel castings are very easily recognized. They have round holes as well as the slots in the casting. See photo. The 49 and 50's have slots only. As long as no one has changed the cast wheels, its easy to see and date. The 51's were in the 296xxx serial range. I think the parts breakdown shows serial 201xxx and above are nearly all the same for major parts.

Also to help date it does the SCv plugs have a screw on nut to hold the hose in?? The latter ones were like a 50..

As for comment white face gauges, no they did not, as Black showed up on LETTER series tractor in 51 year at some point and continued thru 53 the G series.

i seen on here somewhere that you might be able to take the tag off and get the numbers off of it from the backside? don't know if this is something you would want to try or not
