electrical short?

I got a new one for ya. Went to start the 40 crawler. When I pull
the starter switch the fuel line gets so hot you can't touch it. Even
boils the gas in the glass bowl. Looks pretty dangerous. No wires
are touching the fuel line. Anyone got any guesses?

Very simple your ground cable has a bad connection of is just flat out bad. Had that sort of happen on a cub cadet I was working on but the thing was getting it ground by way of the choke cable and I found that by touching the cable and got the heck burned out of my fingers

I don't know. Are you saying I should check the ground from the batt to the frame. Looks like the fuel line is acting like a big fuse.

Not likely. Look at the ground cable and trace where it goes. If it hooks to the frame then look for another ground cable that goes from the frame to the engine. Your problem is, is the engine if getting its ground by way of the fuel lines so some how your loosing the ground. Or even better ground the system at the bolts that holds the starter on

Ok , that is starting to make sense to me. I'm not to good on electrical problems. The batt is grounded to the cast dash part.and the fuel tank is attached to the dash. So the fuel line is acting like a fuse between the fuel tank and the engine which is attached to the dash part

So that means the dash is not making a good connection to the engine/frame so your fuel lines are acting like the ground cable which is not go and could cause a fire. As I said I would move the ground cable off the dash and install it to a bolt that holds the starter on. Electrical stuff to me is Child play but I was a Navy E.T.

I hesitate to give advice here, because I Know next to nothing about electrical. But I run the battery ground cable directly right over to the starter, and bolt it right to the strater bolt on my red tractor. Eliminates all the rusty frame joints, the resistance, etc., and that old starter really spins.

Every machine I have has had the "ground" cable relocated to a starter mounting bolt.
The end of some phantom problems and every machine has cranked faster since.

Take a look at the photo below of "Audie" our 54 Model 40S.

The entire electrical system wiring was replaced.

Notice the rubber hose that has been placed on the choke cable.

The choke cable was covered with the hose to keep it from possibly "arcing" on the negative battery terminal.

Check to make sure the choke cable is not making contact with the negative terminal on the battery or the negative battery cable to the starter switch.

Also check to make sure the choke cable is not making contact with the metal fuel line from the fuel filter assembly.

Hope this helps.

I agree with old. It has a bad ground from battery to starter. It is trying to make a ground path through the fuel line.

I have done this on numerouse tarctors from the A's & B's all the way up to the Iron Horses.... It is night and day differenc when it comes to how much faster they will crank over.
