update on loose 2440 steering

A week ago, I posted for some information about getting that bolt loose and out on the left side of the tractor. I set a lever jack on the step under a 15/16" wrench and jacked it up tight, left if set over night and was able to give it one more notch in the morning. I gave the cap screw a few whacks with a hammer and let it set until afternoon. Late afternoon I was able to jack the wrench up to where I could get the bolt (screw) out. It didn't help me, though, because I couldn't observe any play in the splines that I was hoping to be able to tighten up, so I just set it back together using thread loc. Support the step from below, if you do this, so you don't bend it down.
Does anybody else know where to look for a solution to tighten up the steering? I can turn the wheel a quarter turn without the arm below even moving a bit.

Does the steering wheel move up and down with the free play? I had one here that had broken a snap ring inside the valve assembly which allowed too much end play.

Since you stated in an earlier post that there was no slack in brg's on bellcrank in frt axle or draglink about the only other place for slack is in the threads between shaft(parts key #5) & housing(parts key #18)

No one has looked on the "other" end of the sector shaft,, the yoke end ?? and the bushing in the cover cap ??? If it"s that bad it should be easy to find,,, Darn it

I'm assuming your 2440 has power steering? If so is the 1/4 turn when the engine is running or stopped or both? My 1020 with power steering does the same thing only when not running. As soon as the engine starts and as you turn the steering wheel the tires turn with no slop. Of course I rebuilt/replaced everything from the draglink forward too. A friend of mine just bought a 1520 with PS and it does the same thing. I just assumed it's something in the design. Perhaps others with this Dubuque type of steering could chime in if they have the same issue engine running and stopped?

Have you ever seen the dog bone(parts key #23) or yoke wear enough to cause a lot of slack? I haven't but there's a 1st time for everything.

I ordered a repair manual, so I know what I'm getting into. Thanks, guys, for your help so far. You might hear from me later.
Snowing to beat the band right now SESD.
