I have recently purchased a 1973 1520 John Deere with the 164 gas engine and it was poorly kept the last couple of years. It seems to be very hard on fuel ... I have used cleaner (seafoam) and reset the carb several times, as it get more hours I have to reset as the cleaner works. I changed out the air filter as it was plugged and yes had to reset carb once again. So I guess my question is two fold what kind of fuel consumption should I expect , 5 gallons lasts about 2 hours ...my old cockshutt 35 would get 3.5 hours on that and they are nearly same horsepower ... second part of question is the manual says to run at pto speed 2100rpm and then turn in till it starts to stumble then turn out till it smooths out then open 1 more turn ... why the 1 more turn? plugs are showing rich here ... should I redo carb? it does run smoothly
