On a new to me 4320 I discovered that the transmission grinds when shifting within the ranges, almost have to come to a complete stop. Also if I am at WOT in 8 th gear I can stop the tractor without pushing on the clutch or killing the engine. Do I have synchronizers out or clutch or both? Tractor stays in the gears fine, no noise and not a whole lot of wear in the shifter. And if I go into the transmission what all should I be looking to replace? Thanks for the help.

If I understand your question and you can stop tractor by depressing brakes it is clutch related and it would also slip under load. The 4320 is syngronized only in ranges. You may have a rear main seal leaking oil internally into clutch housing.

Yes, I guess I didn't word the question clearly. When changing gears on the right side of the quadrant is when it will grind and yes I do have a rear main seal leaking also. Could that also be making the clutch disc not release or let them coast and make it harder to shift also?

Should have said syngronized in gears like 5th to reverse or 2nd to 5th not the 4 ranges. The 4000 is the one that is not.

Just to clarify:

The 4320, like the 4000, does NOT have syncronizers on the reverse gear.

d why would you split and change the clutch to see where you are. if you have gone that far you might as well go the rest of the way

You know the clutch is slipping and has to be repaired. It could also be dragging. When he repairs the clutch, replaces the engine seal, etc. He will know if it was dragging also.
If he still has a shifting problem then he can go into the transmission which is probably bad also but he can only split at one place at a time.
When he finds out how much that costs he might decide to put up with it for a while if it's not jumping out of gear.

You MUST be stopped when shifting ranges, they are not syncronised, the gear changes are syncro"s. and can be shifted while moving .(right side of shifter drums ) .

Seems clutch is slipping if you can brake and stop. Could also be dragging causing it to be difficult to shift.
Also like most old synchros the eynchronizers are probably worn. Repair the clutch first then see where you stand.
