I"ve got a jd 530 which lost its steering. spin the wheel, nothing happening. I took the spool valve and worm gear assembly apart and was wondering if anyone has had experience with this unit? The jd manual is a little vague around this area. One of the pins in the shaft was backed out and pressing on it with my fingers it pushed out real easy. I"m thinking I have to secure the pin back in, but do I need to pull the worm gear assembly out of the housing? I would like to know how the unit works with the spring and the fork that spools the valve.

Sorry, the picture of my 70D really does not apply here as Rich pointed out. Although your 530 would have a woodruff key that serves the same purpose as the roll pin on the older models.

Since nothing happens when you spin the steering wheel, my first guess is the splines are worn out where the steering shaft enters the steering unit, or the steering shaft is not even entering the steering unit in front.

Splines was my first thought. Can you still spin it with the pin pushed back in?

The 530 doesn't have a pin thru the steering shaft. The shafts are below the hood and the control sleeve rides up and down on the steering shaft. To properly understand this power steering you will need to get the Two Cylinder Power Steering manual SM 250.

Check your parts book or service manual there is no pin there. The picture is not of a 530.
