timing gears for a 3 cylinder jd engine

hello, i'm hoping someone might know where the key on the crank is supposed to be when timing a 3 cyl jd engine if I pin the timing tool in the flywheel is it 12 or 6 o'clock? thanks

thanks a bunch, that's what I was nervous of. its out of time being my injection pump seized and broke the shaft and a friend that's a jd mechanic says I need need to move my injection pump gear somehow being it must haved jumped 180 because that keyway is wrong now and need to figure out how to get it turned even though I don't have the front cover off and hope like heck I don't have to. any thoughts on that?

You need to remove the front cover if the pump drive gear sheared the key. There is a good chance the mating surface in the gear is scored and should be replaced.

Just reread your post. Yes you should turn the flywheel a turn then see if your pump is in time.

I had conflicting answers and conflicting things going on with the gears, I ended up taking the rocker box off and checking number one to make sure rockers were loose when I turned the engine to have all the gears line up. just had a pop test done on the injectors and had to come home with 3 of them and new orings, the s!@# show continues!..haha thanks for at least trying guys

With #1 on top dead center, use 2 hack saw blades taped together about 1/3 way up spread them to form a "Y" fork the "Y" over the crank shaft and center it across the cam gear lining up the #3 mark with center of cam and the mark towards the crank shaft do the same with the pump gear and the balance shafts it is a funky way of doing it but it works,,if your still having trouble with it I'll try to post a picture after bit..

I appreciate the info but I don't even have the front cover off, the engine is in a wood processor and is quite difficult to remove the cover being the oil pan needs to come off and with the bottom crossmember that is in there the engine would have to come out. engine and pump are lined up I believe but something new is that the injection pump shaft wont fit in the gear all the way up the taper and a jd mechanic has said that the pump shaft should slide right into the gear and have only a few thousands of an inch between the flange and the back of the engine with just the washer and the nut sucked up tight without even having the flange nuts put on yet. trying now to figure out if someone had ever got into the front cover and changed the gear or if on the off chance numbers got messed up on the rebuild somewhere and the shaft might be to long
