Was asked to sandblast and paint this by owner. They are having second thoughts on this. What's you're thoughts. Also how old is it or model number. Have looked on internet only ones I see have double steel front wheels. Bottom of shovel says DEERE. If I paint it what colors should I use. Owner might be interested in selling it what do you think its worth.

Early 1900's , reference John Deere Plow Co. catalog for 1908. Deere purchased the Hoover Manufacturing Co. in 1926 and really got into the potato machinery business . Picture I saw did not have a wheel at all. Said these single beam plows were common, plows with forks to lift potatoes out of the ground.

I looked through JD contracts for 1923 and 1939.
The 1923 lists John Deere shaker potato digger with fore carriage, weight 150lbs, price $22.65

The 1939 lists John Deere shaker potato digger, 10 bar with fore carriage, weight 161lbs, price 20.25

I see yours only has 8 bars so guessing its pre 39. I also looked in pocket ledgers from 1939 on back and couldn't find any thing on the diggers but sure seen some neat old equipment from the past. John

Correct me if I am wrong, guys... John Deere paint schemes during the horse-drawn days used JD green, JD yellow and Red. Wheels and handles were yellow and red/green contrasted the working parts.

They dropped the red in the mass-produced tractor era after the Waterloo Boy, when it was simpler to just blow everything green.

I have a similar horse drawn home-made plow that was made in Ohio about 1870. Dad got it from a neighbor in the 1930's and it's been used ever since. Works good if the ground is fairly dry.
