John Deere B serial question - No Plate!

Hello All,

I have bought a John Deere B but noticed the serial plate is gone. It has the 6 gear transmission so I know it"s at least a 41. There is something different about the radiator as well. Anyways - is there any other place the serial is located? How else can you tell the year?

Any info is appreciated.

When you say a 6 speed, do you mean a 3 speed with a high low or a single stick 6 speed. This will help narrow the year model down.

I don't think they had the serial number but on one place the now missing tag. I'm not sure about the John Deeres but IH had date codes on most of the major castings, try that route also JD changed a lot of stuff on their tractors in a running change, might be able to narrow down the time frame that way. We had a JD A when I was a kid, talking to some of the folks on this forum we determined it was probably made in the first few months of 1950 because of what it did and didn't have.

I mean 1-6 with high and low. It also has a deal below the seat with levers that I believe raise and lower an implement.

It is a 41-47 model. The serial number is not located anywhere else but it can be narrowed down to within a year or two. Pictures would be a great help.

Pictures of the frame rails, radiator cap, front wheels and drawbar support would help a lot...

As and Bs built during about 43 and 44 had a cast iron frame, and at least the As had a pressurized radiator cap.

Does the drawbar frame have a roller, or is the drawbar between 2 pieces of flat stock?

...so it's a 12 speed?? lol (couldn't resist. Pan seat/'47 or earlier. What is different about radiator? A photo would get you awful close.

The frame is cast and the draw bar has a roller. I am told the radiator is steel, not sure what difference that makes or if even true. I have a few pictures I will try and post.

If it truly has pressure cooling (relief type cap and steel core) it is between SN 148500-166999. This is all of the 44 model year and only about the last 700 tractors built in the 43 model year. A rough timeline for this might be about mid March 43 through end of June 44.
I'm not sure if there is anything else that will narrow it any more than that.
Without the tag you will never know the number it was, only a group of numbers.
