1066 4020- 24v to 12v conversion

I recently ordered a kit from Abilene Machine to convert my 4020( SN 129329) The instructions with the kit seem pretty vauge, and do not exactly explain what to do with all the wires. My old starter had a pair of small relays on the side with 2 wires connected to each relay. Should these wires just be taped up, or connected somewhere? That doesnt make sense to me as obviously something has to send power from the alternator to the battery to charge it.....

My old man had someone put a 24v alternator on this tractor about 15 years ago, and cobbled some of the wiring. I"m pretty sure I have the 12v alternator wired correctly, but all the wires with no home down on the starter side have me stumped. I know this has been done about a million times, so I dont think it is too hard, just want it to do what it is supposed to do.

The kit from AM has a generic 12V solenoid for sending power
to the starters solenoid (btw, this is a gear reduction starter). I am using one Group 31 battery in a custom built box.

Thanks for your help

Jason

I meant to add, somewhere along the line someone added a ammeter to the dash, not the prettiest deal ever, but if I remove it, i'll have an ugly hole in the dash....

As many times as this has been discussed in the last few months there should be plenty of info in the archives if one is willing to look. If it was my tractor I attach the breaker mounting plate with breakers to 12 V starter. Then attach the blue & brown wires supplying the breakers to the top post on the solenoid on the 12 v starter IE attach both wires to the terminal that blue wires are attached in photo. Did kit come with an auxiliary starter relay switch?

Can't believe it, Jim, in the official DEERE conversion instructions, the call the circuit breakers "circuit breaker relays""

TreatyLineFarms... does this help?

I think you are making a prudent decision going with one large battery instead of the two little ones. It is a PTA keeping them both in good shape, it seems like they only last a couple of years.

Look at the new starter solenoid close and see which small terminal is marked S, wife's uncle went by the directions, vague like yours, and the S terminal was towards the engine not the outside terminal like the directions showed. chris

The wires going to the circuit breakers (you called them relays) from the starter need to both be connected to the battery cable on the new starter. They can also be connected to the start relay B+ terminal which is the wire that goes to the start relay from the battery cable. Bottom line is they are the 12 volt supply point to the electrical system. Hope this makes sense.
