My operators manual says to use 10W oil in the lift. Is this motor oil or a special hydraulic oil? Also, do I need to turn the engine over to drain all of the old oil out of the system ? I want to drain all of the oil out and refill it. Any cautions? Thank you all in advance for your help.

Yes motor oil (10w-30w will work fine). The drain plug should get it all out (leave it drain overnight if it makes you happy) HTH

The service manual suggests raising the front end to assist squeezing out the last drop.

I use NAPA general purpose hydraulic oil.

My "57 420 leaks worse than a "74 Harley from the lever seals, thus I"m always adding oil to it. I just haven"t gotten around to overhauling it yet. Anyway, I think the manual says somewhere 5W20 is a suitable substitute so I"ve been using the left-overs from the truck. Works fine even though it is a detergent blend. As an added benefit the high-mileage formula has helped seal those old leather seals up a bit...and also stopped what little bit of leak-down it had.

According to owners manual you should flush with solvent or kerosene, operate control lever a few times with engine running. Let drain and with swtch off, crank over to remove solvent from pump and lines. Remove as much as possible before adding new oil. 10w or 5w-20 engine oil...John

You can use the same oil that you're using in the engine. Your hydraulics won't care. If your pump seals go bad it'll end up in the engine anyway so you may as well use the same stuff on both ends.

It is plain old non detergent motor oil. 20wt or 30wt will work better and leak less. The only way to drain it all out would be to stand it straight up so don't worry about what little is left in.

Careful on that flushing like the book says. Ya know all the diesel will not get drained out after the run up. Mine leaked like niagra falls after I wanted to do it a favor and flush it.
