510 JD backhoe transmission

I am looking at a 510 backhoe a neighbor is thinking about buying. Was told transmission will not pull till 5th gear. Believe it is a powershift. What should I look for? Does a 3020 use this type of transmission? What is a average price to fix this problem. Thanks for any advice.

Yes it has a Powershift transmission. Do you know how long since hyd filters were changed and sump screen cleaned??? The damper clutch behind flywheel could be slipping. Next would be to check hyd pressure in all gears. Should be in the 165 psi range. Repair cost could be $500-$10,000

It sounds like the C3 clutch is failing, it is located in the front section of the planetary brake pack, it could be near $9000 to have it repaired, it is the same as a 3020..

Thanks for the replies. I do not know service history on tractor. The owner has it at a friend of mine shop. Also the curl cylinder has the end broken off on rod. I will let my neighbor what you have told me. Until tests are done on transmission he should wait or look for a backhoe that is ready to use.

With the high cost of parts and the intense labor required to work on a back hoe, you can't afford to by a unit needing much repair...
