I have a 1020 John Deere tractor. I installed new coil and points and condensor and cap and button and new wires, I have spark but wont start. If I spray a little bit of start aid in carb it will fire. I took the fuel line off to the carb and was getting plenty of fuel. I am pretty sure I have it in correct time and not sure if I have the points set correct though. Any ideas?

I shut it off and then it wouldnt restart. It ran fine before that though just hard to start before sometimes if you shut it off. I checked for spark when it wouldnt start and I had none thats why I changed the components I changed because of age and the coil was bad.

Does that one still have the electric jet on the carb or has it been changed to the manual one?

it must be the manual one becase there is no wires on the carb. Is it possible that the points are adjusted to far out? I thought if that was the case it would at least try to start

.020" gap on points. Is carburetor ok or is it needing a rebuild? You should be able to roll it with spark plug out and smell gas if its getting it. Is it smoking any? Make sure there isnt gas coming out of intake side of carb. If theres a hole in float it will flood and leak fuel out there.

I resert the points and pulled plug out and turned over and didnt smell fuel. The carb on this tractor has never been off and has been leaking. I will remove it and rebuild it and see if that takes care of my problem. I worked for John Deere for over 14years on the construction side but not the ag side so I am not real familliar with these older gas engines. But I am learning lol.
