1965 JD4020 won't start, just clicks.

My 4020 had been starting fine last week but today it just clicks, does not fully turn over. The batterys are fully charged, new starter push-type switch. The starter was checked out last year, came back fine. The battery cables are fairly new. The only thing differnt, that I can see is the wires going to the safety start switch by the clutch pedal are getting HOT to the point you can smell the wires. Any ideas would be appreciated. I got a $$$ job coming up, need the 4020 back up and running so she can pay for her keep.

Check all the wire connections. Hot wire means a poor connection some place and maybe at the safety switch or any of the other battery cables etc

12 or 24 volt starter??? 24V starter can go a terror at any given moment. It's possible that the solenoid "s" terminal isn't getting enough voltage or amps to engage solenoid. With tractor in neutral(someone sitting in seat is safest way) short across the upper large & "S" terminals on the starter and see if engine will crank.

I'll double check the wires at the safety switch and other connections.

It was converted over by someone else years ago to a 12 volt starter with 2 batterys. I could take the starter off and have it tested again, I could hear the solenoid clicking pretty good.

Thanks to ALL who put their two cents in on my problem with the 4020. We are lucky to have such helpfull members with such a vast amount of knowledge on tractors. 8)

I got the ol 4020 running again. Had the starter checked out and it tested good but I had them replace the solenoid with a new one anyway. It starts as good as new now. Before, It would take a few seconds to fire up, now it fires right up.

If the extra starter relay hasn't been added I'd suggest adding it to the electrical system. This will give extra voltage to solenoid on the starter by isolating the key switch and push button(if equipped) from the starting circuit that supplies elect to starter solenoid.

Thanks, Tx Jim, I'll look for it next week and buy it if I don't see the relay.
