1946 Model A Clutch

Hello All!! I'm a new guy here and in need of some help!

I'm trying to figure something out for my father. We have a 1946 Model A that the clutch will not engauge. The tractor ran fine when it was parked about 8 (or more) years ago. We took it out of the garage where it is kept and now the hand lever will not lock into the forward position where it should be when in operation or engauged position. It moves forward and back, but when it reaches the position to where it would begin the engaugung stage, it will not continue the motion to allow this.

We've loosed the flywheel in hopes that somehow that would change something, no luck. We took apart the clutch and examined the facings to see if by chance something there was amiss. Nothing changed.

I really don't know alot about this tractor other than the basic operation. We are wanting to sell it but obviously need to make sure it runs before doing so. Any suggestions on why the clutch wont engauge properly would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance!!

Sounds like the clutch is out of adjustment. Do you have a manual on the A ? If everything worked before it should work now. Anyway, with the clutch lever in the engaged position. Turn the adjusting nuts 1/4 each at a time as to the same tension. Check the clutch for snap after each adjustment. That should get the snap you need.

It sounds as though the clutch bolts have frozen in the pulley which is not uncommon on a tractor that has sat for some time. It will require a removal of the belt pulley for a thorough cleaning and lubricating of the bolts. Mike
