Is a early 2040 a good tractor for loader work? I'm not familiar with them but there is one for sale an I need a machine with a bucket. I'm not mineing rock or anything. Just chores around the place.

Thanks

The 2040 was made from 1976 to 1982,about 41 H.P. a handy size for loader work and the trans is easy to shift from forward to reverse, great power steering,a plus if it has a reverser.

No hyd reverser was ever offered on a 2040 built for N. American sales. Early 2040's built for N American sales had open-center hyd's[(11CM3 (0.67 IN.3) pump] until SN 266750- .

2040's were good utility tractors.

It will do a good job unless it has been grossly abused. I'm looking at one that a landscaper had, his staff must have been really hard on the tractor. Abused it until it required a complete engine rebuild including crankshaft and the diff. required a complete rebuild. The owner could not pay the bill and just walked away from it.

The open center ones are not-so-good.

I got an early open center 2040 with a 521 loader. This is a lot newer style loader than is typical on a 2040 (I REALLY like the loader). I had it in the shop last year to work on the power steering. They turned up the pump to the high end of the specs at that time. The hydraulic response is very slow and high load equipment like brush mowers overheat the system due to lack of oil capacity. That said, everyone who's ever driven my 2040 has commented that it is a great little tractor - after they mention its hydraulics being slow.

If I were looking for one, I'd get a late or "tiger stripe" one.

Open center 2040 don't have near as large a hyd pump as the closed center models. One doesn't have to get a "tiger striped" model to get closed center hyd's as SN 266750- is closed center and 'tiger striped" didn't start until SN 350,000.

Hey Jim,

I knew that, but seeing if the tractors has tiger stripes is the easiest fastest way to tell between an open and closed center unit. As always, the best way is to check the serial number and know the break.

Not exactly. If standing by tractor pop open either screen in frt of radiator and see which pump is there. Sometimes SN's are hidden by some loader mounting frames.
