Dan and I met at the Piggly Wiggly in Henderson Tn. Wednesday morning and we took my car down toward Bolivar to pick up another friend of mine, Leon Hill. I needed a drivers door handle for my 1994 Mercury Sable and I knew there would be one at Brown's auto salvage off Hwy 72 in Mississippi half way between Walnut and Corinth Mississippi. 700 acres of old cars, cash only. We'd talked about stopping at a restaurant in Grand Junction Tn. and visitiog a friend/collecter Joe Gowan in Grand Junction. We ate and found Joe's home and visited with him for about an hour. Joe had mopeds, Corvairs (a lot of Corvairs) Oliver Cletracks, Avery,Cletrack,Minneapolis Moline tractors, and a lot of things we didn't see. After we left Joe's I went over to an old abandoned Monument business to check to see if there was a old wooden boom crane used to lift monument stones on and off wagons. It was still there.(first Photo) We then took the back roads tour straight down to Highway 72 across the state line and turned east on the highway and went to Walnut then on to Brown's. When we got to Brown's I told Mr Brown what I needed and he sent one of his yard helpers out to find what I needed. The helper was gone a good half hour and I was thinking "this is going to cost me" but when he got back. Mr Brown charged me $10.00 (Dan and Leon said he had more than that in labor)

Rusted and stuck neglected late model "B" It didn't show signs of wear (except the steering gears if that aftermarket power steering motor was used on it for very long)

Left side of the hood on the "A"
The paint was more of a bluish gray than a green. Notice the Donaldson decal on the breather cup

Left side pressure relief petcock, They were pretty fresh and didn't show signs of wear. You didn't need to use them as there was very little compression. I could easily roll the flywheel over several times (not just a problem in one cylinder)

The fuel switch was still there and leaking. Both tanks were present, but I could not account for the soundness of either. The shutters and linkage were gone.

We stopped at this tractor repair shop just east of Bolivar Tn on the way to take Leon back home and took some photos of this "A" and a late model
"B". Leon said the "A" Had been there for years (read priced way to high)I didn't remember seeing it but that only means I didn't look. The good things on the plus list are 1. two new rear tires. and 2. good to better sheet metal. 3. fairly tight steering and fan shaft gears. a lot of origional parts like the mainifold, fuel switch, both tanks and fuel lines, draw bar assembly, seat assembly and that odd looking dust cover on the clutch. The negative things are 1. one of the new rear tires is flat and may be ruined. 2. the clutch linkage has an unusual amount of wear. I didn't look under it to see if anything had frozen and busted. 3. the engine has very low comperssion in both cylinders. I didn't check to see if the magneto clicked.
Also it had the correct height muffler

At the far end of the boom, I wish the town of Grand Junction would take an interest in restoring this piece of their history before scrap iron prices make it dissappear one night. they also have a rail road depot that is falling down from neglect. What a waste!!

The bluish gray paint on the A is because John Deere green in a spray can turns this color after years of exposure to sunlight.

You got a deal on the door handle! Thanks for the photos. It's a shame how much old iron is just sitting around somewhere slowly rusting away. I guess there is a story behind each piece. Would be interesting to hear some of them. I would like to have the car shown in a couple of shots. Looks like a Ford Falcon or Fairlane.
