very common issue with a 30 or 40 series tractor. If they have stock engine, or stock pistons that is the way they are. The newer 55 series engines had a high ring piston for easier starting. Much more improved over the 30 and 40 series. If your tractor works good, doesn't have any blow by or use oil, plug it in for a 2 - 3 hrs and it should start fine. If it has a problem, and you need to do an overhaul, now you can buy a high ring piston engine overhaul kit for 30 and 40 series tractors, so it will be like a 55 series. All diesel engines should be plugged in, in cold weather, it saves the life of the engine.

The newer diesels start really good but the 40 series usually need a little help.As much as people dont like either as a starting aid JD put the electronic device right near the key and if used correctly with a good starter batteries and cables it shouldnt hurt anything.I have seen tractors that were mechanically good that wouldnt start at 50 deg. They are all different some are hard starters from the day they were new and more than few dealerships were never able to help them.

Let the lift arms down and slowly turn the steering wheel as the engine cranks over. If everything is right, it should start. That is good engine, and starter, batteries, and battery cables.

Why not install a de-stroker and shut the pump off?

30 years old, how long was it plugged in? and what do you call hard to start? at 30 degrees it wont start anywhere near like 70 or even 50. Most fuels start to wax at mid 30s.

We always plug them in when it's 40F or colder. What is the Voltage measured at the starter while cranking?

Return fuel line leak shouldn't affect starting. Have you tried bleeding fuel system before attempting to crank?? Does it have an engine block heater and if so can you plug it in??
