Well today took the drive shaft out, I dont know if I did it right but its out, took all 6 bolts out on both ends and took it out one side with alot of help from A board and hammer, theres is no way its going in the way it came out,can anyone tell me how its gonna be easier to put back once I take the bell housing loose and free the clutch???And how to take bell housing loose are there any tricks. There is a place to put oil in close to the bell housing whats that about, do I have to take anything else off before the bell housing cover??? thanks Rick

Did you have two fiber disks in there, one each end of the driveshaft? Shouldn't be that hard to get apart. You do need to have a small amount of oil in the clutch housing where the belt pulley attaches and throw out bearing is. This is separate from the clutch plate and slider which is on the flywheel. There shouldn't be any oil in there. Everything should just unbolt and it isn't too heavy like the tranny and diff assembly. Pictures would help!

yes there were a fibers on each end,but your wrong about not to hard to get out, that was a very tight fit, used a very large hammer 12lb and a block of wood, lucky I didnt break ears off drive shaft, no way to put back together the way it came out.Now are the bolts on the bell housing all I have to loosin up to get to see why its stuck or what. thanks rick

I have taken an LA and an L all apart with the JD motor and did not have that hard of a time with the fiber discs and drive shaft. I would suggest putting the drive shaft in place and a fiber disc on one end. Loosely bolt that one end up with 2 or 3 bolts and allow yourself plenty of play. Then slide the second fiber disc into place on the other end and work the driveshaft into place. Make sure you line up the spiders on the drive shaft with the tranny and clutch spiders before hand. This helps out a lot. I have always had them be a tight fit, but they just take a little wiggling and usually get into place.

I don't have a breakout of the Hercules L motor in front of me to answer the bell housing question right now and my experience is with the JD motor. To get the clutch out easily on the JD motor I have removed the clutch unit which is bolted to the back to the bell housing. Then that allows you to get off the inspection plate on the bell housing and get to the clutch and flywheel. I believe this would be even easier on the Herc. motor because you can unbolt and remove the clutch housing while still attached to the bellhousing since that unbolts from the block. I will look some at of my books tonight and try and verify this. If I can remember I will try and scan a picture or two.

Ok got it out and unstuck, put it all back together with the help of my 75 yr old friend,it seemed to have been ok, but the drive shaft will not stop turning until you try to put into gear ,at this time it will stop turnning and you can put it into gear,Im done.I can handle that, the next owner can do whatever,So now I have an LI john deere with tag and an L john deere that can be driven on a trailor, that I might consider selling, Thank you all Rick Cohn
