51 MT temperature seems hot

I have a 51 MT that runs what I would call kind of hot. It averages 200 or better just going up the road in high gear empty. First John Deere for me and one fella I talked to said they always ran hot. Is he right? Without a thermostat or waterpump I am not sure I can do much about it anyhow other than keep it filled up. Just wandering what she might do when I hook the plows to her in the spring. What should I expect and is this normal?
 

How sure are you that the Temp gauge is accurate..??
Is this a fresh overhaul..??
It is NOT normal for the "Thermo-Syphon" cooling system to run Hot with no load..
Has the radiator core been checked.?
It could need checked for proper fluid flow..
If the coolant is not fully filed over the bottom of the floor of the radiator, the coolant cannot flow and may cause it to run hot...
If the engine is running that hot..is the LOWER Radiator hose or pipe hot too..??
My guess is that the lower pipe will NOT be hot....insufficient coolant flow..

As for the guage we just put a new one in this fall as the old one was getting tough to read. As for the motor being overhauled I do not know for sure but I will check the bottom hose next time I have it out. Thanks
 
If yours is an early one with the temp. sender in the upper water manifold then they do read REALLY HOT all the time.
They moved them to the back of the block at some point.
Just keep a 50/50 mix of antifreeze (premix it before dumping it in )in it and so long as it does not boil over it should be fine.
 
Also put in the 3 gallons of coolant and not anymore. The fluid needs room to move through the system. Do not fill to the top of the rad tube with coolant as it doesn't give it room to flow. Mine does run warm in the summer and my temp gauge is not in the block. If you don't have the heat shield on there that does make it run hotter. As soon as I put the heat shield on mine seemed to run a bit cooler. Toss the gauge probe in some boiling water to see how on the money it is.
 
I had that problem with my M and read somewhere that the water and antifreeze have to be mixed before you add them to the radiator. Drained it mixed it up, poured the mix back in and has not heated sense.

a 51 mt was the first tractor i got to drive when i was a kid. my grandfathers dad bought it new. it always ran 200 or better no load and about 230 working. grandpa said it did it since new and had no ill effects for 30 or so years. wish my dad wouldnt have sold it
 
It's normal. For peace of mind I would change the antifreeze. Pre mix 50/50 & leave 2 to 3 inches of free space at the top of the radiator. Set the timing with a light to fire No. 1 on SPARK at full throttle. Then ignore that guage. It's bulletproof as long as you take those steps. Mine runs 225 give or take a little & that's working her like a red headed step child. Got quite a few decades of running those temp's & hasn't hurt a thing.
 
If you don't need freezing protection to -30, then using less than 50% of ethylene glycol will aid the cooling capacity.

Pure ethylene glycol has a specific heat capacity about one half that of water. So, while providing freeze protection and an increased boiling point, ethylene glycol lowers the specific heat capacity of water mixtures relative to pure water. A 50/50 mix by mass has a specific heat capacity of about 0.75 BTU/lb F, thus requiring increased flow rates in same system comparisons with water. Additionally, the increase in boiling point over pure water inhibits nucleate boiling on heat transfer surfaces thus reducing heat transfer efficiency in some cases, such as gasoline engine cylinder walls. Therefore, pure ethylene glycol should not be used as an engine coolant in most cases.
 
Ditto on what everyone has said on here. Good info and I always learn something new towards my MT for all of you.
 
Had it running yesterday and the bottom of the radiator and the bottom hose were stone cold when the gauge was reading over 190. Took the plug out of the elbow right by the block and the water flowed out cold. Also the probe does not go into the block, it goes up higher.
