Is there a way to unstick a clutch on an L thats fairly simple? I think the clutch on mine is stuck,as soon as I get the carb back on Im gonna drive it and keep working the pedal to see if it comes loose. Thanks Rick

I think there is a cover on the bottom you can remove (at least on the John Deere engines) and then you could hold the pedal down and maybe get a screwdriver/butter knife in at the edge of the facing and work it loose. Engine shut off !

Mikes got the best answer there short of taking off the entire clutch unit which involves removing almost all sheet metal and the drive shaft. I just put a NOS clutch facing kit with rivets on eBay last night if yours are shot.

Rick,
An old method I've used with pretty good success on bigger tractors is to take her out in a smooth quiet spot like a parking lot or a big field. Get the tractor in high gear, which for an "L" isn't very fast. Hold the clutch pedal down while jabbing the brakes sharply. Very often this will break the clutch loose if it hasn't been stuck to long. The brakes have to work well and it does work better on tractors with a road gear but it's worth a shot with your "L". Good Luck!

Stab one side of the brakes only. This really shocks them loose. HANG ON ! Both brakes at the same time just doesn't seem to do it.

Shoot that's right! Again I think Mike and Resting have the right idea in this case unless you do want to take it apart.

When my L"s clutch plate sticks I do the following:

a. Set clutch pedal all the way forward (Wedge a length of 2x4 between banjo casting and pedal).

b. Set both rear wheel brakes firmly fully braked.

c. Set shifter in any forward gear.

d. Disconnect plug wires or ground magneto (so engine can"t start).

e. Crank engine with hand-crank.

The belt pulley will rotate as the engine"s cranked. When the pulley stops rotating during cranking, it indicates the clutch plates are unstuck. Then undo steps d thru a.
