2440 PTO and Trans

Hey guys I'm planning on going to look at a 1977 2440 w/ 146 loader & 8 speed transmission on Monday and wanted to get some pointers. I see "independent PTO" mentioned when I search, doesn't it have live PTO? Was it an option to have something different?

I plan on checking the engine and transmission for water/antifreeze in the oil and hopefully checking the antifreeze for the correct additives. On the transmission, where is the screen to check for brake shavings?

Thanks

Trans sump screen lays crossways in bottom of trans behind the hyd filter on RH side. Pto's could be dual stage clutch type or ind. hyd with a lever between the 2 gearshift handles.

It is my understanding the independent PTOs are entirely independent from the rest of the power train, you can start or stop the tractor or the PTO without effecting the other. Live PTO has other meanings, Early "live" systems allowed you to stop the tractor with out stopping the PTO but you couldn't switch gears with out stopping the PTO, you also could not turn the PTO on with out stopping the tractor. Other tractors like Fords and MFs had a two stage clutch, 1/2 way down stops the tractor and you can shift gears, all the way down stops the tractor and the PTO. Works well for most applications unless you want/need to turn the PTO on and off with out stopping the tractor.

JD tractors with dual stage clutches operate very similar to the Fords & MFs, Push clutch 1/2 down to change gears, all the way down to stop pto.

Yes ind pto is controlled by a separate hyd clutch from traction clutch since 1965 on the utility models
