I am preparing to purchase my second John Deere tractor. I had a '37 Unstyled B that I really liked. It will be a toy/light work tractor on my five acre mini farm. What are the major differences between the A and B, please.

Signed, Eager to learn.

I've ran 'em both doing a lot of different jobs and generally speaking, An A is almost twice the tractor a B is. Plowing the A pulls 2-14's relatively easy anywhere while a B has all it wants with a 1-16 and just plain struggles with 2-12's. The A will pull an 8 foot double disk or a 4 section springtooth harrow and get something done. A B has a tough time with any double disk wide enough to cover it's wheel tracks. An A can pull a PTO small square baler...with a wagon loading, not so with a B. Thing with an A is you gotta put weights on it's rear spoke wheels or load the tires to do heavy work....I prefer the weights myself. In tall corn an A can go twice as fast as the B doing a real job of cultivating with a 2 row unit. Don't get me wrong...a B is useful...but it's underpowered a little for it's physical size...an A isn't, it's simple as that.

Thanks to all who replied. I think I want an A now because it has a little more power.

Basicly the same except for size and horsepower. The B was rated at 15 hp and the A at 24 hp.

If you plan to put either to work, remember they both have a fast 1st gear. The US "B" will be most likely to completely run out of power in 1st gear.. Now, either one can be improved, Power-Wise..as much as you could want..but it does cost money.. Later JDs have a much slower 1st gear that is very handy for heavy work like using a blade on a loader or pulling brush out with a chain, etc.. Either of these US tractors will be slow,
traveling on the road.. Take your pick..!!! Ron.

Like the difference between the draft horse and a saddle horse. They're both horses, but one is heavier and stronger than the other.

Yeah, they are both good and do operate the same, however if you are gonna plow in confined spaces, like a garden plot, etc. the "B" handles easier with a one bottom plow, the "A" usually will pull a two bottom plow, which is harder to handle in tight spaces.
Best of luck !
Jim B.

Yep, I agree with CLW. The unstyled B is pretty much a 2/3 scale unstyled A.

Size only. Everything looks and operates the same. I like the sound of the A a little better.
