John Deere Running Gear

I have a John Deere running gear with 17 inch wheels. It has alumnites on each hub bearing cap. It also has a pretty deep and aggressive stack of leaf springs at each end. I'm guessing it is around 1930-ish. Can anyone tell me anything about it? Does anyone know if you can still find wheels for them?

Does your wagon look like this one? If it does it is a John Deere 963 wagon.

If someone can tell me how to post pictures on here, i"ll be
happy to do so. To answer you question, the leaf spring setup
looks the same but the axle etc looks a little different.

(quoted from post at 14:34:32 11/26/11) You can just go here and enter a model number for a John Deere wagon (846, 953, 963 or 1046) and look at a PDF of all their wagons.
John Deere Parts Catalog

I might have overlooked it but I saw no 17" wheel listed for any of the above wagons. A JD 902 & 951 both had 17" set screw & lug bolt type wheels & spring bolsters. These 2 wagons were built in the mid 30's to early 40's

There maybe a serial number plate around the right rear axle/frame assembly. If lucky enough it hasn't been lost.
Looking through the parts book I was able to narrow my wagon down to a 1950-1954.
If the wagon gear is in good condition. It will be one of the straightest tracking units on the road.
Is the bearing cap a stamped piece of steel? Or a nifty casting with stylized JD lettering?

That"s it! According to the part"s catalog it was only made in that conformation in 1934 which is consisitent with the time frame this wagon would have been made according to the gentleman from whom I acquired it. I appreciate all your help.

I've not found a serial number yet. However, my time has not allowed me to do much. The bearing caps are stamped, but I've seen pictures of the "cool" ones.

Coker tires has a few tires to choose from.

I also have a 951 1934 yr. be careful working with rims they can crack in not handled properly!

good luck

At the bottom of that brochure is a trailer cart listed. I can't make out the model number. What is it? That looks pretty cool to have around as a utility cart on the farm.
