I bought a JD, 10 years or so ago, that a guy was selling as a 1940 ‘B’, not running and the only reason I bought it, I wanted a tractor that was older than I was (not much tho). Anyway no serial number tag and since then I have missed place the manual where he underlined the reasons he said it was a 1940 ‘B’. I remember him pointing out the transmission as part of it, 3 speed with a high & low range, of coarse JD written across the rear axles.
Let’s fast forward to now. I run across an Ag. teacher from a near by school that’s looking for a project for his students and was interested in this ‘B’. The engine is not froze up and seems to have pretty good compression, gravity fed cooling system, no generator, mag for firing. I will be delivering this tractor to the school tomorrow.
My question:
What can I look for to determine exactly what this tractor is? I can see some casting numbers, all that I have seen does start with ‘B’, but I don’t know if that has anything to do with it. Anyway, I’d like to at least be able to show them it is what I'm saying.
Thank for all help.
