1020 starting or lack there of...

Yesterday, I mowed for a couple of hours, stopped for lunch. Went back to job, turned the key and NOTHING, not a single sound from the starter.

Removed the small plate from the transmission thinking the safety switch may have given out, and with a tester saw it opening and closing correctly. When the key is turned, the dash lights come on, and that's the only sign of life. Battery tests good. No previous starting issues.

I don't know what else to check, any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Be DARNED sure it's in neutral while you are troubleshooting the starting system!

Did you check with a test light at the neutral safety switch... key turned to "START" is there power in and out of the neutral safety switch (and then on to the "S" terminal on the starter solenoid)?

Check battery voltage & cleanliness ALL 4 ends of battery cables. I'd also recommend moving ground cable(if not already moved) from attaching to battery box to frame or engine block. Installing a de-stroking screw in main hyd pump helps starting also.

take it out of gear and jump the started with a screwdriver. If it cranks it's a switch problem.

That isn't 100% true. There could be a bad connection or partly broken starter circuit wire that won't conduit enough amps to energize the starter solenoid. Plus a lot of JD starter had had a dealer "KIT" installed that will prevent jumping across solenoid to happen.

So while I was checking all connections, I went ahead and pulled the starter, after all it's only 2 bolts. Went into town and a auto electrical shop tested the starter, it tested well and the best thing was he wouldn't take anything for his time. I kinda forgot about good deeds like that existed.

I had checked all the battery ends, verified the voltage on different components...and it all checked out well.

Bob -- you get the prize! While the switch was turning on and off, it was not working. I jumped the connector with a piece of copper and it fired right up. I thought if the switch was showing open and closed, it would have worked, don't quite understand why it doesn't. Oh well, $47 and a day will have the new switch installed.

Tx-Jim - I've considered the de-stroking screw...I think it sounds like a great winter add-on. I've checked the on-line parts catalog, and guess I don't know what to look for, can you point me in a direction?

Thanks again for your help, it's much appreciated.
