2040, 2240, 2440 owners - front tire size?

Hey all,

I'm really starting to like this little 2040 I've got.

It has the standard 13.6-28 tires on the back. Standard tire size for the front is 6.00-16, but this one came with pert-near bald 9.5L-15 implement tires. I picked up a nail yesterday and figured this is a good opportunity to consider new fronts. For now, I have a pair of badly weather checked 9.5-14s on it, I only put them on because I didn't have another 9.5L15 to replaced the flat. They don't look too bad, but the rims are too light. It has a 541 loader on it and a swept-back front axle.

My first thought was to stick with the 9.5l-15s. Nearby tire store has tubeless 8 ply Harvest Kings for $147 mounted. I suspect these are foreign. They also have 4 rib Firestones for $219 each. Then I got to thinking about the Gensco aircraft tires. They have a set of 12 ply 3 ribs in a size similar to a 9.5-15. Rim, tire and tire sealant for $139 each plus $80 shipping.

Thoughts?

I would stick with the wider flotation tires especially with a loader on it. Those narrow 3 rib tires like to sink in soft ground and rip up sod when turning sharp. My 2555 had 11L-15 fronts and the 1530 I used to have had 7.60-15 fronts.

I think that our 2550 has 9.5 15 tires on it, they look good on it, but it is a bigger tractor. About the Gensco aircraft tires, they are really good and really tuff. They do have drawbacks. They are heavy, don't flex very well, give a terribly rough ride, and don't hold very well when turning. I have a big set on a 4230 deere with a loader, and like the fact that they are thorn proof, but don't like it on rough ground. I let the air down for a soft ride, and then knocked the bead loose in a ditch when mowing, so I would want tubes in them if I were going to run low pressure. We run the 4230 as a hay tractor and it is run alot, in 5th and 6th gear, which makes you want a larger and softer tire. I think that my next try at big rubber will be to put 22.5 over the road tuck tires on as tractor fronts, which will look funny and will require machine work to fab a wheel that will bolt on.
