2550 - grinding tranny noise when at high rpm

I have a 2550 with a 8x2 transmission. When round baling at PTO speed, I encounter quite a bit of grinding when shifting from neutral to low with the other lever in gear. The clutch seems correct in terms of free travel and I have it pressed in fully for the shift, with the tractor completely stopped. What seems to help is to put the right shifter in neutral, set the L, then shift back into 1 or 2.

I was told that the clutch was replaced by the dealer around 4 years ago. Operation seems normal (but occasional grinding while shifting) when at lower RPM. It kind of feels that the clutch is not fully stopping the geartrain for the shift.

Is some grinding normal for this tranny? Any advice? I read the manual and the only thing they emphasize is be stopped to shift H/L.

Also, should this tractor have a greaseable throwout bearing? It shows one in the manual but cannot find the zerk in the access port.

Have you checked clutch pedal free travel?? It's possible clutch disc is warped or sticking on trans input shaft.

According to JDparts.com no grease fitting on throwout brg up to SN 490745

How do I measure free travel and what is a good spec?

On edit - OK read the manual. Current free travel is about 1". One think I noted is that there are 2 holes on the pedal for the clutch rod clevis. In the manual it shows using the lower hole. Mine is installed in the upper hole. Is this perhaps the problem in that the free travel is correct, but full travel of the pedal will not give as much motion to disengage as the lower hole? Should I move it to the lower hole?

The different hole settings for clevis on clutch pedal are for the 2 stage clutch type pto. From the photos of your tractor in another post I can tell it has hyd independent pto so I think your clutch pedal is pinned correctly.

Can clutch flywheel engagement be observed thru one of the access port covers? Hate to consider a split just to diagnose what is going on...

Another point, I recall that occasionally, under heavy load, I will press the clutch fully down but the tractor will still continue to move forward. I have to brake it to stop it. Sounds to me like some times it is not fully disengaging. Maybe I should reduce free travel to 1/2 inch to see if this helps?

Any catching, dragging, burrs, dried grease or
rust? Between the clutch disk and the trans input
spline?
Pilot bearing possibly ?
