The rear (outside)seal is leaking on the PTO. What needs to be drained to change it?

The dealer gave me two seals to replace the original. How do they go in? Normally the lip faces the outside of what ever housing you are trying to seal.

Thanks

I think you will need to drain both the hydraulic fluid and the tranny/rear end if you pull the pto shaft.

If I recall, the double seal replaces on original seal. I think they go back to back. I seem to remember getting a piece of paper with the seals explaining this. I would check with others to be sure.

The reason for installing two seals is to move the inside seal to an area on the pto shaft that doesn't have a groove worn in it from the old seal.

Install the first seal in the casting with the lip/spring pointing toward the rear of the tractor. The idea here is to keep grit away from the inner seal. After you install it put some grease up against the seal.

Then install the the second seal with lip/spring facing the other way, toward the front of the tractor. Use the right size socket to install both seals.

Clean up the pto shaft with emery cloth before you reinstall the casting on the pto shaft.

Hey Dodgeit,
With seals remember that the lip goes toward whatever your trying to keep in or out. In this case the old original seal had two lips one to keep the oil in and the other to keep the dirt out. Since the new seal has only one lip you need two seals or else operate your tractor in a clean enviroment, which is impossible. So to make a long story short, put the first seal in with the lip towards the oil or center of the tractor, away from any worn spots on the shaft as Pete said and the second one with the lip towards the dirt or towards the rear of the tractor.

John,
As you know the seals go into the oil seal housing from the "front facing" side of the housing.
Therefore the seal facing to the rear, to keep out grit/dirt, needs to be installed first. Then the seal facing forward, to keep oil from leaking, is installed.

I only mention this because the sequence you described "may" confuse Dodgeit.

I'm pretty sure that I understand how it goes together but just to be sure I'll use an illistration.

[ symbol = shaft housing showing the open end as the gasket surface of the plate.

{ = seal

If I understand when I put it together it should look like example A not B

A [ } {

B [ { }

C [ { { is how I would have put it together without your help

Hope I didn't confuse anybody but me.

Illustration B is correct. (I changed my answer after looking at your [ and { } symbols again.)

One more thing. After you clean up the pto shaft, wipe it down and put some oil on it before you slide the housing onto the shaft.

Pete,
Yeah, sometimes I assume people know more than I think. I figured he knew he had to take the housing off and when laying on the bench everything is reversed. I was just trying to explain how it should look when asembled not how to make that happen.

It's all good guys. Turned a wrench or two in my time, but like to get various opinions sometimes from people that have already been down the road I'm traveling. They usually have a different / better way of doing things.

Thanks
