I'm having an issue with my B charging system and I hope you fellas can help me narrow it down. Generator rebuilt 3 years ago complete with a new regulator and been working great until I drove home last week. Charging system started bouncing the needle on the amp gauge and then discharged the 6 miles home.
Tonight I had a use for a second regulator and purchased a second one. My thought was that the china points were pitted and just failed with 3 years.
I Installed the new one, polorized and fired it up. The gauge again bounces like crazy and doesn't appear to charge but bounces like never before seen. My thought is that the armature is shorted, does this sound like I may be on the right track? The brushes are great and wearing as they should. Bearing and bushing are like new, wires to the fields appear to be fine. Thoughts?
 
Have you checked the battery voltage while the engine is running? If it's in the 7.0-7.3 range it's probably a bad gauge.
 
Low battery could cause it to jump like that at higher RPM's. When idling does it show a charge or do the same thing?

The VR will close one set of contacts to charge the battery when voltage goes below a certain level and will stop the charge when too much current is being drawn to protect the generator.
 
Battery voltage running at idle, 6.12 and full throttle 6.22. Today the gauge showed strong discharge and indicated 5.34 volts on the meter a few times near 3/4 throttle. Idled back would show about 2 amps discharge. The meter bounces like the gauge indicates. The gauges are all new and have never given me reason to think they have a problem.
I also verified my ground and checked for short across the armature and field posts on the genny.
 
Stuck brush in the generator, it's arcing. Take the band off and reach in and give the brush spring a snap.
