2020 Clutch question

While working on my recent 2020 engine overhaul, I also replaced the clutch disk and throwout bearing (since the tractor was already split) but I left the pressure plate as-is. All three had visible wear: the disk was almost down to the rivets, the throwout had a slight groove in it and the ends of the levers on the pressure plate were also worn.

I reassembled the tractor, started the engine and ran it for a few minutes according to the break-in instructions then got in the seat and tried to put it in gear. It would not drop in and the gears clattered so I knew the clutch wasn't releasing but figured it would be easy to adjust from the access port on the side. I pulled the clips and ran the adjustment screws in and out to their limits but nothing I tried will fully release the driven disk. I can see the pressure plate moving but it just doesn't travel far enough.

My questions are:

1. Which direction is correct for the adjustment screws when adding newer, thicker components. It sounds logical to tighten the screws, which raises the levers - but I ran out of travel before they released.
2. The pressure plate seems to be in good condition so should I try to replace the levers or just buy a new one? The manual seems to reference rebuilding it but my local JD dealer may want to sell me a whole assembly.

I know,,it can happen, but I'm sure you were paying attention to it,,it just seems that the adjustments should not have been off very much, is what is leaning me towards that thought....

(quoted from post at 22:05:27 05/22/11) Reckon it's possible but I recall specifically looking at that when I assembled it - although anything's possible...

I agree with Tim s on installing disk backwards. The only thing I can think that might affect finger height adjustment would be wear on tips of fingers where throw out brg contacts them which should be minimal.

What would happen if I inadvertently left the return clips off while I made the height adjustments? The pressure plate would not release, right?

Bottom line is that I should have checked proper finger height when the tractor was apart so this might be my Memorial Day project.

Which type clutch are you working on? A single or dual stage?

It is a single stage. I pulled the return clips so I could get a wrench on the adjustment screw head but did not reinstall them prior to checking engagement.

I don't have the manual in front of me but IIRC, it says to set the finger height to 2.102" from the flywheel, within .010 tolerance between all three. I'm not sure how that can be done now without resplitting the tractor but am open to suggestions.

I've seen post's of people that tried to adjust fingers through inspection holes however I've never tried this technique while a JD service manager. Maybe Tim s or some other tech will comment.

I got the clips back on and the pressure plate is lifting a good 3/16" but still won't shift so I'll split it and see what's up; maybe I did put the plate in backwards.

Thought I would update this thread and give some closure. I split the tractor and discovered the clutch plate was not installed backwards but it was the wrong part - at least that is how it appeared. The new disk had a different spline depth in the center and contacted the pressure plate when installed so there was no way it could release. I put the old disk back in and she drives fine. However, I still need a new disk so have to get the right one from the JD dealer (but I'll install it after hay season).

BTW, it's nigh impossible to accurately adjust the three lever screws thru the access port on the left side. It's a lot easier to just split the tractor. Maybe the dual clutch can be done that way but it's a waste of time with the single plate.
