Have a 74 JD 4230 Diesel Cab Quad Range tractor that has a rattle you can somewhat feel and hear at idle coming from under your feet. Doesnt matter if the clutch is in or out, in gear moving at idle or not. PTO on or off does not affect it. I am going to check the hydraulic pump and make sure the bushings arent worn on the shaft, but doesnt seem loose, and you cant hear of feel anything in that area when its running. I have to replace the rear axle seals and figured that would be the time to split it if needed. Could it be a worn pilot bearing? Or something in the pto drive line? I know I am kinda pulling at strings but figured maybe someone has had a similar situation. Tractor still shifts fine, clutch works great, fluid looks good. Thanks!

IIRC the plate behind pto drive gear can be addressed with a split between engine/ clutch housing. Maybe Tim s or some other tech will respond to this thread.

The plate(part # R54156) behind this pto drive gear(part # AR61680) could be your rattle. These are located behind the clutch in the clutch housing.

Probably no way to know unless you split it for a clutch job I am assuming if its the pto backing plate? Or do you need to double split it for that? Thanks for all your help guys!

You might look at the hex shaft that runs the trans pump. It would let you know of a failure in that area. How do the hydraulics work?

couple years ago i had a 275 mf that a customer had a rattle noise in transmission i had just worked on a 2640 that engine sounded like it was going to self destruct but discovered that it had a bad water pump bearing. so when i looked at the massey i undid the fan belt and the transmission noise went away it also had a bad bearing in water pump neater one was leaking water so just for fun undo the fan belt and see if the noise is still there

And just to add a really strange source of a rattle, on an Oliver we found the wire spring on the starter Bendix, that pushes the gear away from the flywheel when the starter is not engaged, to be broken allowing the gear to drift forward just enough to touch the flywheel which would pop it back causing a repetitive, irregular rattle...
I thought it was the chain coupler on the driveshaft until we found this by sheer chance when we pulled the starter to paint the side of the engine...

Not sure about a 4230, but on a 4430, there's a valve box..... for want of a better term..... under the right-hand battery. IIRC, two hydraulic lines come in and one leaves; if it gets 'loose', it will make a racket exactly as you've described. One of these real mechanics will know the name of the thing, but danged if I can think of it (CRS, you know).

Just for giggles, try a new spring on the clutch pedal. My 4240 was either stretched or wrong one.
