unstyled B Valve guides

I am getting ready to take the head for my '38 B to the machine shop. I bought some aftermarket valve guides, and I have been assembling information to give to the shop.

In reading the service bulletins, and the general shop manual SM2000, I came across a reference that noted that the valve guides had been shortened at some point, and that the dimension from the face of the head to the end of the guide had been changed from 1-1/16 inch to 1-7/16. It also stated the old guide length had been 3-7/8 inches long.

The guides in the head are 3-7/8 inches but are recessed 1-7/16. The new guides I got (aftermarket) are 3-7/8 inch. The john Deere parts locator also shows the guides as 3-7/8 inch

I'm thinking there is a typo some where, but my plan is to ask the shop to recess the guides 1-7/16 from the face of the head.

Anybody been down this road before? Different opinions?

Kurt,
The JD Service Bulletin from Nov. 15, 1938 (Pg. 2) talks about using the new shorter valve guides and recessing them to 1 7/16 inch from the face of the head (even has a drawing).

If you need a copy send me and email and send you a pdf from the original I have.

If you don’t have the complete set of Service Bulletins that Mr. and Mrs. Larson put together, it’s also a great resource.

Art,

Thanks for the reply. I do have the full set of the service bulletins as produced by Duane and Nancy. Great resource.

I am familiar with the page you reference. My confusion comes in with the chart on page 30-10-12 of the General Service manual SM2000, dated 2-15-1949 which shows the guide recess distance for the unstyled B as 1-1/16 and the guide length as 3-7/8 inch. I"m thinking now that the 1-1/16 is a typo and it should be 1-7/16.

Kurt,
Look at the JD FSB for Oct. 15, 1942, Pg. 1 (Pg. 789 of the Larson PDF). This FSB lists the same guide distance (1-1/16 inch) as GS Manual SM2000, for B-1000 – 59999.
Based on that, I don’t believe there is any typo. 1-1/16“from the guide to the gasket face of the head seems to be the proper distance for that serial number range.

What do you think?

Art,

What I think, is that the original specification for the unstyled B called for the guide to be installed 1-1/16 from the face of the head, and that this was changed to 1-7/16 for the later series B, and retroactively changed for the early series B, and the guide was shortened. (based on the November 1938 field service bulletin.) The same guide is used until serial number 95999.

I expect that when the Deere folks made up the charts for later publications, they went back to the original specifications, and the fact the specs were changed for the unstyled B was "lost in the cracks"

I have an original operators manual and parts book from 1937, and I will look in there when I get the chance and see if the guide has a different part number.

Kurt,
I went to the earliest JD parts book I have. It’s a reproduction of the “45-R” Repair Catalog, dated 8/15/1936. It lists the part number for the Mod. B valve guide as “B358R”.
I then went back to the “PC 676” parts manual dated 2/60. It has the same part number for the guide.

I agree that the ’38 FSB indicates that the guide was “Shortened” but I haven’t found an explanation of what guide they started with or how much they shortened it. It appears that they didn’t change the part number after August of 1936.

If I find something more I will let you know. Please do the same.

Thanks,

Art,

I checked the earliest Instructions and Parts List for the B that I have, DIR 112 dated 2/37. It also lists the guide as B358R.

I guess it"s not surprising that things could get confused if the specs changed, but not the part number.

Ain"t we havin" fun now?
