Update on 48 A Transmission

I told yall awhile back I would be replacing the bearings in the trans of my 48 A. I have the bearings ordered from Deere.

I also found out why the trans wouldn"t turn. A piece of the differential drive pinion gear came off and wedged between the teeth of the large differential gear. Which in turn messed up the teeth on the differential gear that was perfect before that happened.

So I have a parts tractor and I am going to change out all the gears and the differential. My question is do I really have to remove the whole back half of the tractor to do it?(rear axle housing)

I don"t know how I am going to keep the rest of the tractor from falling over if I take the rear housing completely off.

Here are the bearings/races I got today for the lower shaft. I haven't took the tractor apart yet so I don't know for sure, one side is that much bigger than the other?

I still have to figure out something about the stands first.

IMO, you'd be a lot safer using the steel post-style splitting stands. There's one to bolt on each side of the frame with a base, and you can use them for most any kind of tractor. The risk with the 4X4 and cribbing approach is the front end can tip to one side.

With most post style splitting stands you are still only going to be as wide as the tractor frame. Still to narrow and tippy. You really need to get something made to extend out wider to make them more stable.

Would you happen to have pics of some stands that would work? I don't mind buying some or having somebody make some b/c I have 7 tractors including my Dad's and I'm sure in the future I'll be needing to use stands again.

Yeah that does sound better. Where do I get them?

I do want to make sure its sturdy cause I'm sure I'll end up doing a little bit of beating getting the flywheel off and the rest of the transmission parts after the rear end is off.

To get the diff. out you will have to split the rear axle away from the main case.

I take a 4x4 maybe 5 or 6 feet ?? and a small chain and binder and fasten it to the under side of the frame about under the carb. air cleaner area. I then put a jack stand under each end of the 4x4. I block the main case under where the starter goes as it is flat there. You could also fab up a spliting stand frame to bolt to the side rails of the tractor frame. I also made one of these as it comes in handy if you have to split one at the fanshaft and block and frame intersection to put a block gasket and studs in.

Should I leave the axles and wheels on or remove them before I take the axle housing off?

I know I have the ability to do it, but I don't have the space to do it.

I usually leave the tires on so you can roll the axle around. Just make sure that you have it chocked, I've seen them roll down the driveway and almost slam into the car before the neighbor catches them.

That brings back memories !! I had a main case and rear axle hanging from the loader tractor had the bolts out trying to get it apart. The dowel pins were hanging it up ! Once it let go off it rolled down the hill,lucky it hit a tree and snapped in half to stop it as it likely could of went across the road and went into the neighbors barn.

Thanks everybody. Not having to take the wheels and axles off means Ill have enough room to do it at my place. If I had to pull wheels and axles I wouldn't have enough room to do all that.

The parts tractor Im not worried about it Ill just take it apart back in the field where its at and just block it up and cover it back up. It don't have a fan shaft, governor, rad or any sheetmetal so it doesn't matter if it ends up floppin over.

I have jack stands and plenty of blocks, I guess I better go buy a 4x4 post, lol. Anybody have pics of this rigged up in action?

I do it like Mike describes, in fact, that is the order in which the tractor was built on the line. And...now is a great time to look over any thing the transmission needs in the way of parts or even adjustments. No easier than sitting on a bucket with the transmission displayed right in front of you.

Frank-in-the-UK, but the acronym was not appropriate as F-I-T.....
