Finally got some time to tear into the 420T we picked up last summer.

At the time we aquired it, it had been sitting for 20yrs. Louisiana, under a barn eve. Engine turns over fine. I have pulled everything off of the front. Hyd pump, alternator, water pump, ect. Rebuilding all of it, and replacing all seals and gaskets. It had a leaking frt main seal, and while I was replacing that, I decided to do the above since its all so easy to get to with the front end off.

Do yall think I should pull the head? I dont have any reason to think that the head would be cracked, and the entire unit was holding coolant fine.

Head gasket in question I guess is the only thing im thinking.
We are very good freinds with the previous owner, and there was nothing actually wrong with the unit at the time he parked it.

Thoughts?

I would at least pull the valve cover and make sure everything is good under there and ajust the valve lash. If it looks ok and a compression test comes out ok then I wouldn't remove the head.

I would not pull the head if it turns over and you can't see any past leaks. If it does leak after getting it running you can always pull the head then.

Just keep a sharp watch on the oil pressure. Oil pump shafts have been known to seize up from the carbon in the oil after setting a long time,

I wouldn't pull the head or the valve cover.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Course you gotta do what makes you feel good.

Suggest you pull the plugs, spray some oil in there, turn it over 15-20 times and then do a compression check.

If you are not happy with what you see, pull the head.

Good deal.

For the record, I pulled the valve cover to make sure no valves were stuck, and to check the lash.

I shot a bit of Liquid Wrench into the SP holes.

Once I get it back together, ill prob pour some kerosene or diesel into it, and pull it around a short bit with my other tractor, and drain all that before I try to start it.
