Unstyled A running too fast

I can't seem to get it to run slowly. As soon as I bump the throttle handle more than about 15 degrees off of no throttle the thing wants to run away. I have played with the idle screw and if I screw it in the thing will die, so I have it set just above the die point. What else should I be checking?

Thanks.

I have had two tractors that did the same exact thing. The linkage from the gov to carb was out of adjustment. I cant remember for sure but I think if you take the linkage from the carb and pull your throtle to full throtle it should be a half hole to long on carb at full throtle. But check the book for sure. Mine would idle but as soon as you try to give it throtle it would go to full or plus throtle and give you a heart attack.

It may also be that some "expert" put on a second governor spring. This will cause this symptom as well. Use one good spring ONLY. Mike

There is a good write up of how to adjust and set the minimum and max rpm in the John Deere "B" manual SM2004. I think the rpm spec is different for the B, but the procedure is the same.

If you have thrown a weight in the governor, I believe it will overspeed.....

When you say you screw in the idle screw it will die, sounds like you are trying to adjust the idle speed with the idle mixture screw. There is an idle speed screw in the throttle lever, maybe it is screwed in too far against the throttle spring. The tiny screw in the top of the throttle lever is to lock the speed screw from turning.

Good point. Hadn't even thought about it.

Yes I was referring to the idle needle in the original post.

Check your governor rod for drag on carb cotter key And check rod for length. Remove rod from carb & run tractor & hang on to rod & see if governor wants to function when you speed it up by hand on the carb .You don't have to move your carb throttle plate very little to get 1000 rpm. Make sure your throttle plate works freely. The bushing can't be too tight.

I ran into the tight bushing thing on my '50 "B" once. Bought a carb that had been "rebuilt". The governor would open the throttle butterfly but would not bring it closed again. Reamed out the bushing some, and everything worked fine.
