3010 questions/advice

Howdy all--

Thinking about buying a 3010D. Everything checks out for me on the tractor but there was one thing that prevented me from handing the guy a down payment today.

When I engaged the pto, it was a little noisier than I would have liked. I was having a hard time pinpointing where the noise was coming from, but it was in the area of the 2 bolt plate that covers up the pto throwout bearing or from the pto shaft that comes out right near it. The noise was a little quack that seemed to be in sync with shaft rotation. The throwout bearing did have a little play on the shaft, but I can't judge if it was excessive because it was the first time I had ever looked at this setup. I looked at my neighbors 3020 and his same bearing had a similar amount of play.

The noise DID seem to decrease as the fluid warmed up (outside temp was in the upper 20's) and the hydraulic reservoir was low on fluid (wasn't even touching the dipstick, but we brought it up with a few gallons).

I am aware of the pto issues with the 10 series tractors, but I am feeling good about that topic with this one.

I am buying this tractor for reasonably light work. It will need to run a 24T baler and other lighter 540rpm chores like brush hogging and 3pt tilling. I will never be using it for any 1000rpm duties.

The tractor is in really good condition otherwise, which I view as a sign that it was well taken care of. My hesitation is that I don't want to run into a tractor split a few hundred hours after it gets home.

Anyone with a 3010 or 3020 that can offer a few cents?

Thanks everyone!

That is not a throwout bearing. The bearing puts pressure on the PTO fingers to engage the PTO.(Just the opposite of the clutch setup)That is why greasing the bearing is critical. Could be it simply needs greased.

Be sure and check that the 4 bolts that hold pto stub shaft on are "tight". Also the pto speed change(drive) gears are right behind and below the clutch housing inspection plate so it's possible the noise could also be coming from them.

At first I thought the noise was coming from the pto drive gears, which really made me hesitant about the purchase. Are they visible if I take off the 4-bolt plate just behind the inspection plate? Replacement requires a split, correct?

Any thoughts about the noise becoming less pronounced after running a while? The tractor hasn't been used much lately, and it was low on fluid upon first inspection. When I took off the inspection plate I had to dig out a mouse nest. My neighbors 3020 on the other had had oil pouring out upon removing the inspection plate.

I very much appreciate the responses. Thanks.

Possible, if u take the 2 bolt cover off of the bottom of the bellhousing inspection cover there should be a zerk fitting in there, give it a couple of pumps of grease.

Is tractor single or dual hydraulics and narrow or wide front? What are they asking for it?

Upon removal of the 3010 pto stub shaft, all you can see is 4 bolt holes and the speed shift pin in the center of the bolt holes.

Oil inside clutch housing on 3020 depending on range could be rear engine main seal, frt trans drive shaft seal or if above SN 123,000 hyd pto control valve seals leaking

Thanks for the replies, folks. I spoke with a couple of dealership mechanics and they both felt like it was just a rusty section getting scrubbed every rotation. The fact that it improved with use made me quit worrying about it. When I started it today, I couldn't even hear the noise from the seat like I could on Saturday.

I brought it home today. 1963 3010D, sn39456, wide front, single hyd, paid $6400. I live in SW Wisconsin. I looked at a 3020 down the road from this one that was more recently overhauled but very rough looking, tires were blown, narrow front, no top link, and the guy didn't want to move much from his $7000 tag. The one I did bring home has 80% tires with fluid, factory wide front, wheel weights, new starter, new batteries, and original paint in near-excellent condition. I don't care much about paint, but I view it as a measuring stick as to how the tractor was cared for. I'm pretty satisfied so far, though I have only driven it onto the trailer and off, and gave each of my kids a ride while they bellowed that Jason Aldean song.

Tx Jim, I will relay your info to my neighbor--thanks for that.

4010 Puller, I will give some shots to the clutch bearing. I plan to go through the entire maintenance schedule before the season starts--new fluids, filters, hit all the zerks, check fuel pressure, check timing, etc, etc, etc. I want this tractor to keep its value and perform when the hay is dry but rain is coming.

Looking forward to this tractor, and I'm looking forward to working with all of the folks on this board. Thank you in advance.
