Got the Petronic Ignition on and my 60 ran exceptional for awhile and then died. I noticed the resistor was very hot. I could tell if it was steam or smoke as it was snowing. I let it cool but was unable to get it started. Can a resistor burn up? Is there away to test it? What if it doesn't go through the ignition switch but a toggle? Any one got any knowledge on these things?

Are you sure you have the right electronic ignition? The only reason I ask is because I also purchased a kit from Denny's for my John Deere 60. Three times they sent the wrong kit, what they sent was for a 630 which fires 90 deg apart. My JD 60 is 180 deg apart, so that is how I found the issue by rolling over the flywheel. The tractor ran but not very well. The forth kit they sent was correct and has worked great since then. My JD 60 is nothing odd, it is just a 12 volt positive ground.

It must be the degree because it ran really well for awhile and then just went dead. Not like for a chug of gas just dead. I think there is coil trouble though. How were they to work with as far as returning things?

I had no problems with the returns, they covered the shipping both ways. Talking with their support they did not seem to have any knowledge of a John Deere 60. That was what caused the confusion. When I called to order the kit the first time, I told them my information from the distributor. I ended up calling the manufacturer who told me the correct kit to buy. My John Deere 60 has a stock distributor so I thought this should have been easy. After getting the correct part installed all has been working very well.

Flint---I too live in the "arctic" here in upstate New York. I put EI on my John Deere MC crawler five years ago, and it starts every time on one revolution. Period. I put EI on my John Deere 60 snowblower combination---zero degrees out and need snow moved? She starts in one revolution. Period. Now for the important part. I get all my electronic equipment, mag stuff, etc...from a good friend, John Brillman. He taught me a lesson years ago about why you do NOT deal with Denny's Carb, and the extra and improper stuff they sell you. Well I took his advice and only used what John Brillman sold me and everything is perfect. I also have EI on a few non John Deere tractors I use at my farm---no problems at all. Give John a call...tell him Dominic Centonze sent you...his number is toll free 888-274-5562 The Brillman Company.

Well this is getting to be an education any way and I've learned alot, I just wish it was at even 30 degrees rather than 20 below. The resistor tests out a 1.5 ohms however a primary test of the coil sends the vm into a tizz and it can't settle. I can't get my probe in to test the secondary as I didn't take it off the tractor yet. I got too cold to test the ignitor as indicated by Petronix but hope to do that Saturday in the daylight. Once I know if it works I'll have to give Mr Brillman a call. Thanks for the tip.

the kits I used were from Genessee, had the coil and full instructions, have seen 8 kits in operation with flauless results. Sounds like you did some sort of piece meal arrangemnt without or ignoring instructions. The instructions I had were straigt forward, a caveman could have installed. They want fire with charger you need to charge your battery. Fully 12 volts bypass the resistor. I don't know about all the coil talk just used the proper one they sent. Don't mix and match your set up. Call Genessee, kit was about $100.00

I didn't ignore any intructions or piece meal the thing together it came as a kit from Denny's Carb Repair and the only instructions received are as shown on the website which I followed.

put Petronix units on [2] 730's & [1]720...one 730 ran about an hr. the other [2] days & the 720 still going...called & talked to Petronix tech. & they have no warranty & they don't reccomend them on the 2cyl. Deere's...$300 will buy a bunch of points....went back to points in my AC puller & put in a new set every other pull...use the old ones in my other tractors...JMO

I have installed a set in my 60 that used to be a puller and now used for farm duty and also in my 70 puller with an MSD box. Good instructions and zero problems. If they don't recommend these for two-cylinder John Deere tractors, why do they continue to sell them? That doesn't make sense to me. Sounds like a merchant doing some CYA. Mike

Mike ;thats what I thought also until I talked to the Petronix tech...says 30 month warranty also but they wouldn't honor it...I'm sitting here with a new unit on my desk...part #1122 ignitor Delco 2 cyl....send me some postage & address & I'll give it to you....nothing but BS smoke & mirrows....I'll stick with my points...take care ...Kent

the toggle switch is not the issue. a switch is a switch in this case, they're both mechanical connections of the same type & function.

I get that part but I read somewhere that they use some knid of special wire between the switch and coil that reduces voltage. That is why I've wondered if my set up was okay.

if its a thunder volt 3 coil thats what i run you need at least a 1.5 ohm resistor i looked it up when i was having trouble i was running a 5 ohm resistore but that broke inside for some reason so i went to napa and got a 1.5 ohm resistor i think it cost like $7 works a lot better that way

Flint, whether or not the coil you purchased from Pertronix requires a ballast resistor YOU NEED TO ASK THEM.....

If it does they do run pretty hot and the first few uses they can smoke as "stuff" on them gets burned off.

A toggle versus a regular Deere switch dont matter provided the switch can handle the current which it probably can as its only like 4 to 5 amps or so.

There should be near the same as battery voltage on the switches in and out when its on and likewise on the ballast high input buttttt ttttt if the switch is conducting (same as points closed) THE LOW OUTPUT OF BALLAST OR COIL INPUT should be around 5 to 7 volts (if it uses a ballast) as the ballast drops around 6 volts leaving 6 on the coil input if its a 6 volt coil that uses the externsal series ballast.

YOU NEED TO CHECK WITH PERTRONIX IF THAT COIL USES A BALLAST AND IF SO WHAT ITS OHMS RATNg IS (often around 1 to 2 ohms)

John T I found out that petronix doesn't make the coil that comes with this kit from denny's cab shop and i don't know who makes it as I can't find it on the internet. Petronix makes one that does have a internal resistor that I'll definately be looking at.

Talked to Petronix today, I do have it wired right and do need the resistor. He also said it would be hard to believe I could fry the Ignitor unless I left the power going to it for quit sometime with the tractor not running. He also said the ignitor could take voltage of 12 or a little better as my alternator puts out. He is going to email me a way to test the Ignitor to make sure it is working. I just wish it would warm up to zero or above so it isn't so painful to stand out there working on it.

I've put on many of these...you're not supposed to use the resistor as they require 12 volt. That's why your heating or burning up. I always hooked my ignition to the side terminal of the resistor ballast then hooked onto the coil from there. Also made sure to unhook the 12v feedwire from the starter as it is not needed. You've improperly installed the unit. Maybe it's not burned up...get a 12 volt coil and rewire.

I guess the question I have is why did you not just install a coil that did not require external ballast? Get the proper coil with the proper amount of resistance and eliminate all that extra junk under the dash.

Never fear the guys that think EI is the devil. It is a fantastic idea on any tractor that is not being "policed" by those who insist on a tractor being totally original.

I have the EI in two of my tractors and have not had any problems except for when dad left the ignition switch on for a couple weeks.

I put EI in a late B over 4 years ago and the cap has not been off the distributor since. I live in a corrosive climate where points fail quickly especially if the unit is ran then left to sit for months on end. I was constantly having to remove corrosion from the points.

Install it correctly by the directions and you'll not have a problem. All the guys that bad mouth them were either ignorant of how to use their multimeter or too lazy to do so.

It was a kit from Denny's Carb Service for 12v Neg Ground specific to my tractor which I installed as the direction said. The only thing is my ignition switch go through a toggle switch as I haven't had time to restore those parts yet. Can the resistor burn up?

Of course the reisistor could burn up. A simple visual inspection will reveal it's condition.

The point of my post was to get rid of the resistor. It is an extra component to cause problems in the circuit and clutter the underside of the dash.

Get the proper coil which does not require external ballast. Check it's resistance before installation or check it at the parts house before you purchase it. I think most of those pertronix kits require at least 2.5 ohms but check your paperwork to make sure.

If you didnt check the resistance of your circuit before installation of the kit then it's very possible that your ignitor is fried. It is not accepting of too much power.

The coil was part of their kit it is a thunder bolt II or III which I thought was a 12v coil. The resistor is not discolored it just got very hot. I didn't unhook the wires to check resistance but there is continuity. How many volts should there be coming to it from the switch?

There should be 12V coming from the switch pre resistor. I have no idea what type of resistor is installed to know what type of voltage you could expect out of the resistor. I think you should read the literature that came with your coil to see if it requires external resistance.

I had 12.5 coming to the resistor prior to the chaos. Like I said my ignition switch is a toggle hooked from the battery as the ignition switch doesn't work. (thats the way I bought it several years ago) If you search Denny's Carb Shop you can see the exact kit I got and the only wiring diagram that came with it. I would assume the Thunder Volt coil is 12v unless they sent me the wrong coil.
