51 john deere mower

I got a question concerning a john deere 51 mower. Are these mowers made specially for a john deere M, and if so how easy are they to operate?

I think they will mount to an MT and know they mount to an M as I am lucky enough to have an M/51 duo. Fairly easy to connect/disconnect, much easier than the mid mount 20 mower, also used on small Dubuque tractors. I use mine primarily for clipping pastures and ditchbanks I like the visibility of the cutter bar, basically just look over your right shoulder.

ok, thanks alot I have that mower with my M and as long as I have owned it, it has never been put on so I was planning on putting it on sometime and seeing how it would work. Also how do you adjust the heighth of what it is mowing?

there should be a chain on the mower that you connect to the tractors left lift arm. Both the lift arm linkages will be disconnected from the drawbar/hitch and the pins engaged to the frame to lock the hitch in position. When cutting, you can raise the cutterbar about 3 ft at the outside end to get around stumps etc. by using the Touch-o-matic For transport you have to lift the bar manually (watch your fingers!!!..I can still hear Dads voice) and lock with the rod/nut.There is an adjustable shoe on the outside divider which carries the cutterbar. Hope I haven't confused you too much, Bob

thanks, thats what I thought you had to disconnect the linkage to the draw bar and lock the drawbar in. yes there is a chain that would connect right up to the touch-o-matic lift. that answers all my questions for now thanks for your help. I appreciate it alot.

I had a JD No 5 mower with all original hitch behind my JD M. The only thing is that a pull behind on a tractor with no power steering can be a challenge. Also, your neck will likely hurt if you run it a long time due to constantly turning your head to see the blade location.
I found a JD M-20 and restored it. It is dedicated to this tractor so no issues hooking and unhooking. It is not only easier on the neck, but much easier to work around objects due not being behind the rear wheels.
I found the original type twist link chain so it operates just like factory.
