3010 Diesel will not start - Part 2

To Tim S and others. Continuation of previous post about my 3010 diesel that will not start after sitting for 5 months in the barn.

TimS, My email is open under the Modern View of the Forum.

Worked on the 3010 this past weekend. Performed the following troubleshooting:

- Tried to start the tractor on ether as suggested by TimS. When the ether was injected while cranking the engine, it changed sound like it wanted to start but it would not. Tried repeatedly without success.
- Disconnected output line on fuel pump and cranked the engine. Fuel came streamig out so the fuel pump is good.
- Disconnected the injector pump input line and cranked the engine. Fuel came streaming out. Line from fuel pump, through fuel filter, to injector pump is good.
- Disconnected the return line coming out of the injector pump and checked the elbow fitting for a blockage. Everything clear. Cranked the engine and fuel came streaming out. Put it all back together.
-Loosened the fuel line on the injector pump going to one of the cylinder injectors and cranked the engine. No fuel came out of the loosened line.

Diagnosis thus far is fuel is getting to and from the injector pump but nothing is flowing through the injector pump to the cylinder injectors. Appears to be a blockage or a stuck shutoff valve inside the injector pump.

Any more trouble shooting I can do without removing the injector pump?
Getting ready to leave town for two weeks so may not be able to try things that are suggested until I return.

Looking for all the help I can get.

Thanks.

JimmyJim

Maybe you should remove the time cover on the side of the pump and make sure the pump is turning,it is possible that the pump drive shaft sheared,,not likely but possible..I'm wondering if it's turning over fast enough too,,maybe think about chain pulling it if you have a straight shot out of the shed, and a little help....

Jimmy there is a very good chance your injection pump drive gear on the camshaft has stripped off. This is very common on 3010's. The cam gear runs the oil pump and the injection pump. Easy way to check is to unhook your tach cable, spin the engine over and see if the tach drive is spinning. This is why you are not getting any fuel at the injectors. Let me know what you find.

One sure test of the injection pump is.

Disconnect one of the injector lines from an injector.

Then hook an injector to that line, crank the engine and see if it pops off a fuel charge.

Only catch is, you need an extra injector - or - you need to pull one out of the engine for the test.

I'm no diesel mechanic but if it won't run briefly spraying ether into the intake I don't think you have very good compression.

Tim,

Called you this afternoon. Tried to leave a message but your machine kept cutting me off. Will try again later.

Thanks.

There's a bit of an art to making one run on ether, to much locks them up ,,not enough lets them die....

Could be the metering valve is stuck. Not uncommon for one that set for months.Used to keep several rebuilt pumps on the shelf. Occasionally one would stick even with injector oil in it.You might jerk the throttle back and forth or tap lightly on the side od the governor housing. (the square part of the pump)to get it unstuck.

I just repaired a 4020 inj. pump that was doing simular things. The plungers had seised in the pump and wouldnt pump fuel to the nozzles. New pump- head was $800.00 plus and a rebuilt pump from Deere was $1000.00 and change. Your plungers could be stuck due to old stale fuel. Only way to find out is take it apart.

Plungers can be checked without pulling the pump. You hook compressed air to one of outlet ports on the pump and rotate. When they port is in "fire" position, you will hear the plungers snap if they are not stuck. That is also how pumps are timed when the marks can't be found.
