51 a clutch

i just put in new clutch plates in my a. the old ones were broken and in pices. now how do i ajust the 3 bolts on the side? if i put the clutch in and titen them all the same with a tork wench thay are all sticking out at defferent lingths. it i tighten the with all the same amount of threds showing one is tighter then the outhers. help me out guys. thanks Bob

Do you have a washer with each castle nut? That could make the difference if one nut has a washer under and one doesn't.

Don't try to adjust them with the clutch engaged. If they're all the same length how could one be sticking out farther than another unless they're not all seated as they should be. Snug them up with the clutch not engaged. Then turn each nut in the same amount a little at a time until the clutch has a good snap to it. Make sure the T-Bolts are all seated the same.

The owners manual on my B's says to adjust the clutch engaged ( handle forward ). It also states the bolts may protrude different lengths through the nuts. Handle should take pretty good force to snap in.

My '60' manual agrees with you and says (paraphrased)"with 50# of force" (hard to measure) but, it needs a good push and a 'thunk' to be engaged. HTH

P.S. I replaced my clutch parts about 20 yrs. ago and have NEVER had a problem (touch my head --it's wood!!)

Hmm, I figured the bolts should all be the same? I just had the clutch pulley on my 48 A completely off the tractor and toggle bolts out, all 3 were the same length. So I count how many threads are showing on each one so they all have the same tension on them. Clutch has to be pretty tight to plow or mow tough thick grass.
