2550 electrical prob - tach

Tractor is running fine, out baling, and the tach starts jerking around. Needle starts to bump down from set RPM 500 rpm or so and jerks back. bout every half second or so it jerks. Engine is running smooth and not changing rpm. I am thinking electrical connection corrosion in the wiring harness or perhaps an alternator issue. Have not dug into it yet. Is there a likely connector to check first for corrosion? Could it be the sending unit? Where would it be located.

This is intermittent. If it happens again, plan to put a meter on the 12v to see if I am getting a variable voltage from alternator. I am suspecting it may not be the alternator, however. Batteries are being kept well charged.

Pickup coil stabs into timing gear cover.

Problem MOST LIKELY is broken connections on PC board in instrument panel.

Like Bob said.. we have usually found that its the board in the dash.. we have spent hrs soddering the connectors on the board.. Usually just hairline cracks around the pins on the connectors.. There is also a circuit board that pulls out on the right hand side.. make sure it is making a good connection..

I was thinking only the SGB utility tractors had that "pesky printed circuit board" of which Hogleg's tractor may be.

Tach problem also could be a faulty dash ground.

More info - not SGB, open tractor. It is only the tach that is jerking. baled some more today and it is now doing it constantly. Gas and temp guages are rock solid.

Pick-up coil or tachometer or wiring problem.

Any of the above mentioned items.

Just wanted to circle back on this. The problem was the wire that came from the sensor on the front of the engine was rubbing on the block just behind the alternator. Used a cable tie and tied the wire to the alternator wires to keep it off the block and the problem is fixed.

Thanks for the help. Would not have found it otherwise.
