5020 transmission

Hey Guys,
I know most of us deal with the 2-cylinder tractors but I stumbled over a 5020 that the fellow wants 3,500$ for. While it doesn"t look to bad and does run well and most of the stuff works on her it does have one serious problem. No low range gears. Now I have a fair amount of experience working on transmissions in 3020 and 4020"s but never have gotten into this big a tractor. The guy says if he doesn"t sell it pretty soon he"s going to scrap it. I checked the adjustment to be sure it is actually going into low range and it is but it won"t pull. It starts to go then just grinds so obviously at least the syncro is gone. My question is has anyone been in a transmission of a 5020 lately and what else am I likely to run into besides the syncros and rebuilding the shifter assembly. Looking at the Deere parts page it looks like most of these parts are still available but pretty pricey. Looks like two to three thousand just for these parts. I hate to see an old classic junked if I could save her without costing a small fortune. What do think.

They are basicly a 4020 transmission on steroids,,and yes the price of the parts are on steroids too, they split about the same way, just heaveyer stuff...and bigger parts bill....

Check the shifter that"s at the top of the transmission howsing. That shifter is set in a hole in the top of tranny and dirt gets under the shifter and get packed so hard that you might have to us a hammer and long screwdriver to break it up. Then blow it out with air or use highpressure washer to clean that dirt out. Many 5020,s and 5010,s were gotten rid of cheap because of this minor problem. Check that out first.

Thanks Andy, I'll check that although it sure would seem to be to good to be true. Course if that fixes it the guy will tell me he wants more money for the tractor.

If you check it out do let us know if that's the problem. The seller might still give you a break for your honesty, I suppose I got your conscience going ... sorry about that.
