51B intake push rod tubes in cylinder head

the push rod tubes in cylinder head of my 51B started leaking water and im thinking of getting rid of tractor due to loss of interest in this project. im sort of on the fence with this idea. has anyone changed these tubes and is it a fairly reliable fix? just had head off prior to leaking starting and dont know if i disturbed the old seal of tubes(wasant leaking prior to removing the head)? tractor is realy to large to transport to events, so i would be interested in a swap for a smaller tractor (will consider all brands). thanks for replies. d.coleman

A lot of times i have found even if you just drain the water for an extended period or have it hot tanked or steam cleaned, it will break loose the debris that has formed around the tube or if its a steel tube, it will just rust through. i have had the best luck with a small set of bushing drivers and then cleaning the bores really well. Some fine sandpaper or emery cloth. Then I put Permatex avaition brown sealer on them and install with another driver. So far i havent had any leak.

You can use a tap to thread the inside of the tube, then a long bolt and some oversize nuts or piece of pipe to pull it. New tube is about $24 from Deere. Use locktite green and it'll seal up fine.

thanks for responces, my dealer quoted me a $49.00 each(per tube). this isnt the first time ive felt that the price quote was doubled or quoted as each instead of "set". thanks, d.coleman

Order them from Deere online. List price is just under $30 each. The dealer doesnt have to sell at list price, but if you order through JDParts, that gets you the list price.
