throttle stuck wide open

I parked my 1959 730 and then went to restart it and the engine went past full throttle. Throttle lever position doesnt seem to make a difference. Got it shut down before it ruined the engine. Anybody got any ideas what would cause this? Never had it happen before in the 20 years I've owned it. HELP

Many things can happen to cause that. Look the linkage over real good. I had a tractor one time do that and the linkage had fallen off the carb and that in turn cause it to suck the throttle plate wide open and that cause it to rev up real good. Also check for linkage binding some place and then next the gov may have problems

AS previously stated check all the linkages to ensure they are not binding up on something. I will make a guess that one of the governer weights has become unattached from the mounting frame. I had a 730 diesel do that one day & considered myself fortunate to get it shut down before the engine self destructed. Pull the end cap on the governer and look inside.

I understand that and that is why I listed things the way I did so as to go from easy to harder instead of jumping into the hard and working back to easy stuff

Yeah, easy to hard is good.

I thought of this because I bought an old unstyled B for parts. Engine was stuck. Turned out the block was internally busted and the pistons were cracked at the journals. When I got the governor off, one of the weights was missing. found it in the bottom of the crankcase.

I think she went into serious overspeed, and the operator just ran away until she blew.

Have you checked to make sure the governor arm hasn't slipped on the shaft?
