Hello Gentlemen; I have a couple questions about my 1949 A that I have taken apart to put new rings in it, and bearings for the crankshaft. The previous owner had a "no maintenance" policy with his farm tractors, so there was about 4 inches of sludge in the crankcase. I decided to take all the oil lines off and remove the oil pump and housing to make it easier to clean all sludge out. I have to order the appropriate gaskets to install these parts now that I have cleaned up them up. I need B251R and B246R. Are these available from other sources than JD? Where I live it is much easier to order them off the internet and have them shipped to me. Also, the upper water pipe needs to be replaced which I know are available. Is it possible to heat up the braze to remove the old one? Or is there a better solution for removing the old? Thanks in advance for any replies, I appreciate the knowledge.

If you buy B246R from a non-John Deere source, you will be taking a risk. If you have a friend who lives close to a JD Ag Dealer - have him buy it for you and mail it to you - sure easy to do!

I don't think you would have an issue with the other gasket mentioned. The B246R is the oil pump gear gasket whose thickness will determine pump performance, good or bad! If I knew the thickness, I could save you grief - I don't! The jdparts site doesn't give thickness on this one either. 'Sorry! (PatB)

Mark - UPS for this gasket is overkill! Oh I know, what one is willing to pay depends on how bad a part is wanted, but I am so displeased with UPS rates I could spit! No one is calling them to account.

My business is nearly a not-for-profit one, and my shipping partner (US Postal Service) is surely this way (LOL). Seriously, I find so many are reluctant to use USPS for anything. That gasket would do well in an envelope and get anywhere in the States for a song. UPS - may cost up to $5!

That is why the originator needs a pal! From time to time, we all have such a need! There went my nickel! (PatB)

My last FedEx experience, I paid for 10:00 AM one day delivery and didn't get it until about 3:00. When I complained they said it was ridiculous to think they would actually deliver everything on time and refused to refund my money for lack of performance.

My last Postal Service experience, a package was sent to me USPS for next day delivery. This was Thursday afternoon and the sender was told that it would take until Monday to deliver it. It came Monday afternoon. The sender asked about using Priority Mail and was told that would also take until Monday. You DO all know that Priority Mail is the same as First Class don't you? It just costs more. If you don't believe me, ask your P.O. They have no problem telling you.

So far UPS has never let me down. When it counts, its UPS for me.

Loren – Perhaps I am too old for this environment, but I accept some responsibility to do my best to control costs that are passed on to my customers. And it is true also that many of the things I ship and the places where I ship are more suited to the USPS than to UPS, plus the USPS furnishes many of the shippers I use – more cost containment! Finally, yes, I understand the various classes of mail along with their limitations!

Now – one fellow allowed as how a $5 charge by UPS was less to pay than spending the gasoline money to drive a long distance to his Deere dealer – and so he considered the $5 a reasonable price to pay for shipping a B246R gasket which, BTW, fits into an ordinary envelope – a single $0.44 stamp would even carry it! My point is this – folks need to do some planning now and then to stay out of a time-crunch, and also “think outside the box” when it comes to the alternatives. Now for the guy who has plenty of money to go with bad planning and inability to think of alternatives, let him pay! I don’t know about yours, but “my economy” isn’t that forgiving right now.

In closing, I will simply remark that if buyers do not begin to start kicking about UPS charges, NO ONE will! I also recognize this is a FREE society (at least for now) and each of us remains free to choose how we spend our money. Praise the LORD and GOD Bless the USA! (PatB)

Thanks for all the replies, I have to run near Deere so I can pick them up. Any suggestions on the best method for removing the old water pipe?

Thank you
