51' B broken crank ?

Well, after sitting way too long the ole" girl was stuck in 6th. Put on a chain and pulled her BACKWARDS out of the barn. Should have known better. There was a loud pop before she began rolling back. What a sick feeling. Can someone tell me what I have likely done? I fear the worse. The flywheel does not turn with the wheels rolling. What likely parts will eye likely be looking for? Thanks for any insight as I intend to get her back running soon.

Not much info here. Was the clutch in or out? Were the rear wheels sliding or rolling when you pulled it? Will the wheels roll now?

Not sure if clutch was engaged or not. (think that it was as there was resistance) Pretty shaken and mad at myself. Maybe better if I ask how to diagnose. Seems as if the flywheel will not turn whether in gear or not...

Maybe the flywheel won't turn because engine is stuck from sitting. You said that it had been sitting for a long time. It doesn't take that much for rings to stick up if they've been damp and rusted to bore some. I would start by removing crankcase cover and looking inside to see. I suspect something in the trans. or clutch went first. To make you feel better I just broke a flywheel on an A. I've put numerous ones on but just got careless this time.

I've never seen a B with a broken crank from any type of abuse.

You likely broke the gear that meshes with the differential or 6th gear or the first reduction gear or it may just be that the worn overdrive popped out under heavy load and you have not really done any damage.

That's encouraging to hear. The head is off and the pistons were stuck a little, but did move some before the 'pop'. Not sure now, need to regroup and look with a fresh attitude. Will put into another gear and pull to see if the flywheel will move and check further. Any suggestions to narrow it down further? and, thanks for the thoughts

Forget about freeing up by pulling it around. You will just break more stuff, like you may of allready done ?

Chain a bar to the flywheel and try turning it over. But first remove the rocker arms and spark plugs. I think I may of read where you have the head off ? if so your good to go. Spray lots of penetrant in there. A cable come-a-long cable wrapped around the fylwheel and then down to pull off the drawbar frame works wonders on them too !

The weak link in my 51 A drive train was the first reduction gear which sheared the key and split the hut when i locked up the rear wheels when the brake shaft spur gear dropped into the final drive. Quite a bang. My 52 B looks like the first reduction gear is less robust than everything else although if I recall it has a spline not just a key. I expect it would still be the first to go. Not that hard a fix. The gear is often available on ebay usually $50 to $100.
