52 A questions

Working on my A when I have some extra time. I"m working on putting the carb back together and was wondering if there is any rough starting adjustments for the load and idle. Need to know also what to torque the head nuts to? Looked in the I&T manual and don"t recall off hand what it said, but I just want to double check. Last question. When changing the engine oil and filter, I put 8 qts in the crankcase. The operators manual says 11qts. Is the roughly 2 qts in the gear reduction cover? on the right side of the engine/transmission and the roughly 1qt in the air cleaner bowl included in the 11qts figure? Thanks in advance.

Except for torque value for the cylinder head fasteners, these are all questions that your Operator's Manual should have the answers for.

If you do not have an Owner’s Manual, it can be obtained from either your local Deere (Ag) dealer, or from Deere Pubs (800) 522-7448. You will need either OMR2001 (A584000-647999) or OMR2002 (A648000-up).

Head stud nuts are tightened to 125 ft-lbs for “A” tractors A628888 and earlier, and to 150 ft-lbs for A628889-up.

You need one pint of engine oil in the reduction gear cover. Almost two quarts in the air cleaner, and 11 quarts in the engine.

These are rough starting adjustments for the load and idle.

Start the load at 3/4 to 1 turn open.

Start the idle at 1 to 1½ turns open.

The crankcase on our 52A will hold about 9 quarts; the oil bath/air cleaner will hold about 1½ quarts.

The first reduction gear cover holds about 1½ Quarts of 140wt gear oil.

If you would like a copy of the lubrication checklist for our 52A, send me an email.

Hope this helps.

The reduction cover on an A tractor does NOT use 140 wt. It should be the same as used in the engine since it has the ability to mix and mingle on that tractor. Only the trans/differential sump use gear lube.

An A has no seal on the RH end of the crankshaft which allows engine oil to pass the main bearing and drip into the reduction cover then run back to the engine crankcase as it overfills through a seep hole in the maincase.

Thanks for the replies. I"ve got an operators manual already. Just kind of hard to look at it when you are at work. Got the carb put back together though. Now if I could just get the head back from the machine shop that I took it to to have the valves and seats ground then I would be set. I know I got 8 to 8 1/2 qts of oil in the crankcase. Mine is a 52, so I don"t know if that makes a difference to not. Haven"t changed the reduction cover oil yet, but will. Thanks again.

your manual is likely for or at least stating the amount for the earlier A's. the later ones with the starter in the crankcase ( underneath) held less oil for obvious reason.
