hi, i have a 2840 thats has been a really good tractor and has never had any of the hydraulic problems people talk about until resently. at first the brakes would take a couple "pumps" to get firm then they would work fine, and now we lost power steering.. every now and then right after you start it it may turn left, but never right, and all the other hydraulics work fine, loader, 3 pt, and the brakes work fine after a couple pumps, we found a fluid leak from a blown gasket on the steering side cover kinda behind brake pedals if looked at from side, we fixed that via new gasket, then it started leaking were the steering column is bolted down, found the two front bolts came loose and every time you moved the steering wheel it would lift the coulumn up a little and leak hydralic oil. tighted the bolts back down and the leak stoped but still no power steering. im curious what is going on here. my dad was using it at the time and he said he thought he heard a pop, I think it could be the steering motor itself or the column, i dont understand much about how the system work but i would assume the seals are bad in the steering column. its almost like a rack and pinion system in a car right?? ANY thoughts, ideas or answers would be greatly aprrieciated!!!!!. by the way deere wanted a thousand dollars to rebuild the steering motor!!!!

I believe you know the answer. Somebody is going to have to rebuild the PS.
Never rebuilt one of those myself. I think jdemaris or txjim had some advice posted on here on those PS rebuilds.
The brakes may just need bleeding. The right brake on my 1640 gets air into it every few months. One of these days I'll install the new brake seals, springs and balls that are currently sitting on the work bench.

I have overhauled many power steering valves like yours, and the $1000.00 could not be that far off if the 2 valves (left and right) need replacing, but is seldom required. Most times new seals and ajustments are needed.

buickanddeere, You might want to "repair" your brake problem another way. The top side of brake piston is higher than the brake valve causing oil to lower in piston and suck air in top of piston. To correct this problem I have installed the 50 series setup, by installing a brake valve fill line from the line coming from oil tank at rad. by 'T'ing into line. At the brake valve you need to install the 50 series plug with fitting for the hose (if there is room under foot board) if not, then weld a small steel line into steel plug you now have. This has always worked for me.

44 Diesel Tech is correct as the steering valve needs attention. The o-ring seals can be very challenging to install on that type steering valve.
